Highway 17 Closure Just South of Wawa

An accident has closed highway 17 just south of Wawa. OPP issued a news release just before 8 this morning however it does not provide any details concerning the accident itself. It’s indicated that there is no detour around the accident site which occured about 15 kilometres south of Wawa and it is not known how long the highway will be closed.
Funeral arrangements for Jack Ostroski Senior

Visitation for Jack Ostroski Senior will take place at the Arthur Funeral Home on Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and again from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A funeral service will take place at Precious Blood Cathedral this Thursday morning at 10:00 a.m. Ostroski passed away in his 80th year — he was best known for being instrumental in the 1992 restructuring of Algoma Steel.
Open house for new SHC building Tuesday

A public open house is scheduled for Tuesday at the new home for Superior Heights Collegiate. The new building on North Street will house SHC students and staff after a year at the former Sir James Dunn high school on Wellington Street East. The open house put on by the Algoma District School Board starts at 4:00 p.m. and runs until 7:00 p.m.
International Lake Superior Board of Control AGM at Lake State Tuesday

The water levels of the Great Lakes and Lake Superior outflow regulation will the main topics at Tuesday’s International Lake Superior Board of Control Annual Meeting. The meeting takes place at the Cisler Centre at Lake State and begins at 6:45 p.m.
Hounds make second trade with Owen Sound Attack

For the 2nd time in less than a week the Soo Greyhounds and Owen Sound Attack have completed a deal between the Western Conference opponents. Soo Greyhounds GM Kyle Dubas announced this afternoon that the Hounds have acquired forward MICHAEL SCHUMACHER along with a conditional 2nd Round pick in the 2017 OHL Priority Selection from the Attack in exchange for Yegor Malenkikh. Schumacher was selected by Owen Sound with their 1st pick (40th overall) in the 2011 CHL Import Draft. The 6’3″, 198 lb winger played last season for Frolunda HC in Sweden before being drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the 7th Round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft in June. Michael will be one of the fifty-four players to arrive in town for Training Camp 2011 which opens with registration on Wednesday.
Part of Hub Trail dedicated to John Rowswell

David Orazietti, MPP joined Brian Hayes MP, Mayor Debbie Amaroso and former mayor John Rowswell’s family to dedicate the new expansion of the Hub Trail and Waterfront Walkway to the late mayor today. The latest extension of the 20 kilometre Hub Trail will add to the existing improvements that have linked the Sault Locks to the Art Gallery of Algoma, and via Bay Street to the Ermatinger Old Stone House and the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre. The Hub Trail connects key cultural, historical, and natural areas of Sault Ste. Marie such as the Waterfront Walkway, Bellevue Park, Algoma University College, Sault College, the new Sault Area Hospital and Fort Creek Conservation Area while providing community residents with an alternative, environmentally friendly mode of transportation. Today’s announcement is part of a joint effort by the provincial, federal and municipal governments to provide economic stimulus funding to Sault Ste. Marie. Together, the three levels of government have provided matching funding totaling $5 million through the Communities Component of the Building Canada-Ontario Fund to enhance the Hub Trail system by adding additional linkages to the 24 kilometer multi-use non-motorized trail system.

Sault College staff members will be helping incoming students get adjusted to college life beginning today. The 6th annual Transition to College program designed to assist incoming students with disabilities with the transition runs from today til Friday.
Rowswell Hub Trail and Park Dedication

A dedication ceremony will take place this afternoon for the official opening of John Rowswell Park and the John Rowswell Hub Trail. The ceremony will take place at 2 this afternoon at the Mariner’s Compass patio area located adjacent to the Clergue Park walkway on the east side of Civic Centre.

Break and Enters:
“A residence was entered on Moluch Street sometime between midnight and 4:30 am on the 27th of August. Items reported stolen included 32 inch Sharp flat screen television jewellery, keys, a wallet and a 2006 Dodge Pickup -silver in colour.
“An attempt break and enter was reported to have occurred sometime over the weekend to a residence on Moluch Street.
“A garage on Rossmore Road was entered on the 27th of August and a bike was reported stolen.
Theft Reports:
“Two bikes were reported stolen on Wellington Street East and Wawanosh Avenue. The bike on Wawanosh Ave was a Specialized Rock Hopper Pro – orange in colour.
“Vehicles were broken into in the downtown area, Moody and Estelle Street and Northland Road and several in the Fort Creek Conservation parking lot. A white Back Pac, a Nikon camera and several purses that had been left inside were reported stolen.
“A front licence plate of a vehicle parked in the Casino parking lot was stolen on Sunday afternoon.
“Solar lights were stolen from a residential property on Old Garden River road last night.
Mischief Reports:
“A vehicle on Market Street was keyed.
“A garage door on Henry Street was vandalized.
“A vehicle parked on Eagle Drive had the roof damaged with a cement block.

Eckerman Corners Safety Improvements

Efforts to improve the safety of the Eckerman corners intersection where M-28 meets M-123 gets underway today. Currently only M-123 traffic stops at the intersection but once reconfigured, traffic from all four directions will stop. It will take until mid-October to complete the work and Intermittent lane closures under flag control will be in effect during the project.
