Fisher-Price Recall

Health Canada and the Consumer Product Safety Commission in the U-S are saying it’s a good idea to check your kids’ Fisher-Price toys.
The company is recalling more than 10 million tricycles, toys, and high chairs over safety concerns.
Most are being recalled in the United States, but about 400-thousand of them were sold in Canada.
Mid-Afternoon Power Outage

There was a power outage this afternoon in the far western part of the city impacting over 500-PUC customers. The mid-afternoon outage lasted an hour and impacted customers in the area of 2nd Line west from Carpin Beach west to Airport Road. No word on the cause of the outage at this point.
OPP Beat

Sault OPP are investigating a break-in to a residence in the 100 block of Lakeview Road in Aweres Township was yesterday.
Entry was gained through a basement window.
Items stolen included a CD player, and some clothing.

Police Beat

A 17 year old girl was charged with failure to yield after another car-pedestrian accident on Willow Avenue – this time at the intersection of McNabb … where a 63 year old woman was struck as she was crossing with the lights. She was transported to hospital with non life threatening injuries.
Police are investigating the theft of another licence plate from a vehicle on North Street, while a mountain bike was stolen from Barber Boulevard.
A couple vehicles were vandalized yesterday – a fence damaged on Balfour … and an election sign was damaged on Wallace Terrace.
21 year old Jordan Cimino-Williamson of Wellington Street was charged with shoplifting at Zellers-Station Mall.
And three people were arrested inconnection with domestic disputes.

Bruce Mines Stimulus Projects Update

A public meeting was held on Tuesday night in Bruce Mines as an update was provided on three community projects. Two of the projects worth around 2 million dollars combined, were approved for stimulus funding and are being financially supported by all three levels of government. The local share for those two projects is around 400-thousand. The projects involve the highway 17 corridor improvement work and the enhancements that will be made to the waterfront park area. The third is a potential project that if senior levels of government funding can be secured, would involve replacing Bruce Mines aging community centre with a new multi use complex on the waterfront.
Crib Consultation

Health Canada is launching a public consultation on the safety of drop-side cribs that could lead to a ban.
The ban would apply to the sale of drop-side cribs at traditional retailers, second-hand stores, flea markets, garage sales, and web-based sites like eBay and Craigslist.
Health Canada says there have been about 90 reported drop-side crib incidents in Canada in the last 10 years, and in recent years several models of drop-side cribs have been voluntarily recalled.
Pink the Rink Fundraiser Results from Saturday’s Greyhound Game

Over 20-thousand dollars was raised at Saturday’s Greyhound game as part of the ‘Pink in the Rink’ fundraiser sponsored by Scotia Bank and Pepsi. The funds will go to the Canadian Breast cancer Foundation.
MNR Washouts Update

The Ministry of Natural Resources has issued an advisory in regards to roads that are impassable due to the heavy rains from last week. The list of impassable roads includes: McDonald Creek Road which has several unsafe bridges and washouts; Carp River Road at Brant Lake; Pipe Lake Road 1-kilometre south of Carp Road intersection; Tribag Mine Road at kilometre 10; Garden Lake Road at Birch Lake and Mile 38 Road at several locations between kilometre 11 and Tay lake. Streams and rivers are also unpredictable at this time and the MNR advises stay away from riverbanks as shorelines can be unsafe.
Requesting a Possible Witness to a Weekend Accident Come Forward

City police are making an appeal to a possible witness of a weekend accident to come forward to assist with an investigation. The two vehicle accident occured on Saturday afternoon at around 2:30 at the intersection of 2nd Line and Great Northern Road and involved a white Toyota Corolla and a white Chev pickup. Police have been told there was a driver of a red vehicle that was approaching the intersection at the time of the collision and may have witnessed the accident.

Madam Justice Susan Lang – a judge on the Court of Appeal for Ontario will be speaking to Algoma University students and members of the local legal community this afternoon, beginning at 4:00 at Algoma’s Lecture theatre.. She’ll be speaking on the intersection of law and society – followed by a question and answer period.
