It is that time of year — cutters will be out Thursday morning to open the waters of Whitefish Bay and the Upper St. Mary’s River for the start of the 2010 shipping season. Four cutters will lock through the Upper St. Mary’s River — operations will extend from Whitefish Bay to Detour. The waters will also be opened between Cheboygan and the South Channel later in the day. Recreational ice users are reminded to plan their activities carefully and use caution on the ice, if necessary.
