It was no Olympic medal, but it was a decent result for Sault Ste. Marie’s Brigitte Acton on Friday in the women’s slalom. Action was the top Canadian, finishing 17th overall at Whistler. The Sault Ste. Marie skiier was tied for 11th place going into the second run.

The Verdi Hall is the place for a ‘Radical Retro 80′s’ party fundraiser Saturday night. The event is being hosted by Ward 2 councillor Terry Sheehan and Lisa Bradford — it starts at 8 o’clock and will have 80′s music and fun all night long. Proceeds from ticket sales will go towards relief for Haiti and the local Alzheimer Society.

The ‘Winter Wander’ takes place at the Pukaskwa National Park on Sunday. Visitors can meet at the park entrance at 11:00 a.m. to participate in various activities from skiing and snowshoeing to wildlife observation. Children’s activities and Olympic-themed games will also be offered during the afternoon. The event is being put on by the Friends of Pukaskwa — they are a non-profit, volunteer organization dedicated to support the purpose of the park through educational programs, events and community awareness.

Sault College will be introducing workshops aimed at preparing employers with fewer than 500 workers for immigrants wanting to work. According to Statistics Canada’s 2006 Census, immigration will account for all net additions to the labour force in Canada by 2017. The Colleges Ontario Network for Education and Contract Training and the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration are offering the ‘Are You Ready’ program. The ‘Are You Ready’ workshops start Monday afternoon at 5 o’clock and run on Tuesday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. They will specifically provide interested businesses and organizations with knowledge and resources they need to enhance their cultural competence to screen, interview and integrate immigrant talent. Sault, Michigan City Commission will have a public hearing at their meeting on Monday related to the city’s Master Recreation Plan. The state’s Department of Natural Resources requires that communities adopt a five year recreation plan if they want to apply for recreational grants.The last plan expired in 2009 and a new plan must be approved by the commission before April 1st in order to be eligible for grant funding. The Community Services Board and the Planning and Development Department started collecting the data for this year’s plan more than a year ago. After the hearing, the city may take possible action regarding their master plan for 2010-2014.

Sault, Michigan city commissioners will look over a number of goals on Monday for the 2010-2011 fiscal year. Among the goals listed are aggressively enforcing overnight parking as it relates to fines, continue the transfer services agreement with War Memorial Hospital regarding fire and ambulance fees and increasing the city’s tax base by actively pursuing new businesses. Additional goals include proceeding with the construction of the Federal Building, continuing work on resolving blight issues and sell surplus land to increase the tax base.

The Dial-A-Ride Program has submitted a number of items for Monday’s City Commission meeting. One item includes a request for the commission to appropriate 398 thousand dollars for the operation of the system for the 2011 Fiscal Year, which begins October 1st. The group has included an Operations Plan — in it, the International Bridge Bus would experience no changes to its current route. The fares would be two dollars U-S and 2 dollars and 20 cents Canadian.

Goulais River Fire

OPP have yet to identify the person killed in yesterday morning’s fire at a residence in Goulais River. The deceased person is believed to be the only resident of the Bye’s Side residence in Fenwick Township. A forensic identification will be required to positively identify the victim. The Sault OPP detechment, OPP Forensic Identification Unit, Office of the Fire Marshall and the Office of the Coroner are continuing their investigation.

Hunter Fined

Rory Aitkenhead of the Sault has been convicted for unlawfully hunting a bull moose without a licence. Conservation officers were checking a cabin on Crossover Road last October when they came upon an untagged bull moose that was claimed by a native – further investigation determined that Aitkenhead, who had a cow tag – had shot the bull without the proper tag. He was fined $1500 and barred from hunting in Ontario for a year.

Driver Charged

City Police have charged 75 year old Ernestine Wychopen of Bay Street with running the stop sign on Conmee Avenue at Carmens Way yesterday morning resulting in an accident. She also needed treatment for non life threatening injuries. Both vehicles were severely damaged.
