Canada Basketball sent out a press release earlier this evening … stating that they will host a press conference at 12pm tomorrow at Air Canada Centre.
No details were given, but there is strong speculation that what I first wrote about / reported 6 weeks ago could finally be made official (at in PART) on Tuesday:
———-
Wednesday March 21 2012 – 10:40pm Eastern – Toronto, ON
The details are sketchy right now but there is strong speculation swirling at the moment that Canada Basketball could be close to making a major announcement regarding its Men’s National Team.
Steve Nash may be taking over as the “General Manger” of Team Canada.
It would be a role similar to what Steve Yzerman (and, previously, Wayne Gretzky) has served for Hockey Canada.
This move has been swirling in the rumor mill for weeks (if not months) and it is apparently closer than ever.
If / when this unveiling is made, there is strong indication that Jay Triano will be named as Head Coach of the Canadian squad; his second stint as the lead man on the sidelines for the Canucks.
The Men’s National Team did not qualify for this summer’s Olympic Games in London and, thus, doesn’t really have any meaningful games on the horizon for at least another year. However, the hope would be – with Nash taking over – that the 2-time MVP would be able to attract Canada’s top talent (some who have arguably not shown up in Red and White in the past) and convince them to represent their country.
Time will tell if this truly goes down and what impact it could have on the future on the Canadian National program and the growth of the sport with current and future generations.

I will be all over this news on Tuesday — as will @Paul__Jones — and as soon as any new information comes along, I’ll have it in this space and on Twitter ( www.twitter.com/Eric__Smith ).
A huge step for the present and FUTURE of Canada Basketball is (likely) about to be taken.
Have a good one folks.

Wow that would be great news for Team Canada. Nash is a very smart basketball player who I can see someday coaching in the NBA. I’ll stay tuned.
- NickWhile I’m very glad that Nash is potentially running aboard the upper brass, this is NOT like Stevie Y or Wayne Gretzky’s take-overs of Hockey Canada men’s Program GM roles. They were not slightly below the peak of their powers AS A PLAYER when they took over, they were faaaar removed from their primes, and several years removed from their active playing days PERIOD!!
He should still be playing for the Red n White. I could care less if he thinks he’s served his time or if he wants to rest his body more in the summer or spend more time with his family. THATS what you signed up for when you became an athlete/celebrity. You have your whole life, in an extremely youthful retirement to catch up on your years being daddy. Plus for a few weeks of international competition, training camp, it really doesn’t dent your summer holiday plans for meeting all of the obove off-season personal objectives anyway.
IMO, You’ve NEVER finished serving your time!! When your career is over, then you can call it a day for your country IMO. Until you hang up the runners, you play for your country if/when called upon to grace your colours on the global stage.
- Anthony L@anthony L. Spare the whiny shrill rhetoric, please. While it normally the case to play out your career & then go into management( where & when qualified) it doesn’t HAVE to be so. Esp just because Anthony L says so!!!

- A. GansonNash should help Team Canada to attract the best players available.
In the past players like Magloire always had an excuse not to play .
- BertMaybe that type of attitude will change with Thompson and Joseph with Nash involved.
Wow Anthony, do you live in North Korea? lol maybe you should star in that new movie, The Dictator.
