Saturday December 10 2011 – 11:54pm Eastern – Toronto, ON

Training camp – and more importantly, FREE AGENCY – opened in a flurry on Friday evening as teams officially began their 2011-12 season and rosters started getting drastically altered around the NBA.

There was no exception for the Raptors as President and General Manager, Bryan Colangelo, began to surround his young core with some veteran pieces.

The first move was signing Toronto-native, Jamaal Magloire.

Reports indicated that the Raps were close to trading for swingman Mickael Pietrus as well but that deal fell through on Friday evening and the likable Frenchman will stay with the Suns for now.

Colangelo went after another wing as well, inking Rasual Butler to a 1-year contract.  Butler was at camp (as was Magloire) on Saturday.  He spent a great deal of the summer working out with DeMar DeRozan and he said he is close with new teammates James Johnson and Jerryd Bayless as well.

Three others signings are awaiting confirmation for Toronto:

- Center Aaron Gray
- 36 year old guard Anthony Carter (first reported by Doug Smith of the Toronto Star)
- Forward Gary Forbes

Forbes is a restricted free agent.  He has been signed to an offer sheet by the Raptors.  The Denver Nuggets now have 3 days to match that contract or simply decline it and allow Forbes to head to Toronto.

If everything goes as expected, here’s what your 2011-12 Toronto Raptors will look like:

Guards – Leandro Barbosa, Jerryd Bayless, Jose Calderon, Anthony Carter, DeMar DeRozan
Forwards / Centers - Solomon Alabi, Andrea Bargnani, Rasual Butlers, Ed Davis, Gary Forbes, Aaron Gray, Amir Johnson, James Johnson,  Linas Kleiza *, Jamaal Magloire

Kleiza (micr0-fracture surgery) is with the team and taking part in portions of training camp.  In fact, head coach Dwane Casey said Kleiza is ahead of schedule with his rehab (originally projected to be some time in late January / early February) but he would not give a specific return date or updated timetable.

I like the mix of young talent with experienced, verteren role-players. I think with guys like Magloire, Butler and maybe Carter, there will be a real presence of leadership on and off the floor form guys who have been ‘there.’

I look forward to watching this team develop this year and maybe fight the 8th seed in the East.

I am not totally concerned with losing games to get a high pick this year because the 2012 Draft is probably the deepest since the 2003 draft. Besides, if the season starts to slide out of control, all those one year deals for vereren role players could come in handy as potential trade options.

Should be a good year and I am thrilled that we have the opportunity to watch soem great NBA ball this year.

I am thinking that having our draft pick play in Europe means that he does not play so well as to elevate our status out of the lottery and so we get another good pick next year too! As long as they battle every day I will remain a Raptor, I don’t think Jay was given a real chance though.
