Friday June 25 2010 – 2:35pm Eastern – Toronto, ON
It was an interesting night for the Toronto Raptors as a projected Top 10 pick fell a few slots in the draft and landed in Toronto’s lap.
Big man Ed Davis did not work out for any teams outside of the Top 10 teams but when he was still on the board, Bryan Colangelo had to jump on him.
The North Carolina product is a solid shot-blocker and rebounder and he gives the Raps some insurance for the potential departure of Chris Bosh.
Davis, the son of former NBA’er Terry Davis, is recovering from a wrist injury but Colangelo is still hoping that the lanky forward will suit up for the Raptors in the Vegas Summer League in a couple of weeks.
Soon after the selection was made, Davis joined the media at the Air Canada Centre via conference call:

Jay Triano then weighed in on the acquisition of Davis and looked ahead to the rest of the evening and what might be in store for Toronto:

But apparently Triano was wrong about the Raptors being done for the night. Colangelo was able to add another big man to the roster when he pulled off a late night deal with the Dallas Mavericks … sending a 2013 2nd round pick and some cash to the Lone Star State for Florida State’s Solomon Alabi.
Colangelo hinted at the Alabi deal (but didn’t officially announce it) and talked about his ‘draft night’ overall when he spoke with reporters just before midnight:

The usual tradition is to have the draft picks in town the day after the draft but due to the G20 summit going on in Toronto, Davis (and maybe Alabi) will not have a press conference and jersey unveiling until some time next week – or later.
For more on the Raptors and what went down over the course of the evening, check out the live chat that Paul Jones and I hosted for nearly 6 hours last night:

Have a good one folks

I dont know about this pick …he just doesnt seem ready to come in a contribute right away. I thought we needed a impact guy right now. We are most likely losing 25pts and 10 reb a night in CB4. I was hoping for P.Peterson or even Eric Bledsoe for more of an imediate impact.
Not to say Ed Davis wont be a good player but it may take 2 or 3 yrs to actually see the potential come to fruition.
- NeilNeil — this team has zero chance of making the conference finals over the next two seasons.
What’s the point of getting a player who can help “now”, but might have a lower ceiling in the future?
Thanks to a slew of terrible transactions by our GM, this team is clearly going backwards. It’s obvious Colangelo is in way over his head, but who cares about next season?
So, we can make the playoffs and get demolished in the first round?
What’s the point?
- brento.Colangelo did a nice job with the draft .
Most had Davis rated in the top 10 and Alabi, before the illness report, was in top 20 .He might be a steal .
If Raps sign and trade Bosh, they could get some solid talent in return using Bosh’s $18 million.
My area of concern is still coaching . PJ , Iavarone and Triano might not be the answer.
- ChasPoint goes to brento.
I just don’t know what Colangelo can do to make me want to watch this year. Losing me.
- BiancaWow since you guys left The Game Plan the only thing anyone ever talks about on the Fan 590 is hockey and the Maple Leafs …(except Bobcat, he isn’t so one track minded). Like are these guys serious? The only show I will ever listen to again is Prime Time Sports, nothing else…it’s the middle of summer and they’re talking about the freakin’ maple leafs! We’ve got all this baseball stuff going on, and some of the craziest things ever are about to happen in the NBA in terms of free agency…but no…these people want to talk about the freakin’ Maple Leafs and Thomas Kaberle…wow this Canadian media makes Toronto feel like a joke of a sports city. You and Jack talked about everything in the sports world, even if soccer or hockey wasn’t your greatest interest….man this is sad.
- SpenceI hope this is a start of a new better era post Chris Bosh.
