Wednesday August 26 2009 – 11:27am Eastern (Toronto, ON)

The dog days of summer continue in the NBA.  There’s not much to talk about right now.  Things will be VERY hot in another month though … as camps will be opening around the league.

There are a few notable stories right now though:

(1) Allen Iverson writes on his TWITTER account that the Memphis Grizzlies made an offer to him yesterday.  We’ll find out if A.I. decides to take the deal or not.  Keep in mind … on the weekend … DIME Magazine reported that sources had told them that Iverson had a deal done with Charlotte and the signing would be announced some time this week.  Time will tell I guess … as this saga continues!

(2) ESPN has an interesting – and ‘frightening’ – story today about the NBA and its officials facing a potential labour war.  Apparently the referees deal with the league runs out next week and both sides are far apart RE: trying to negotiate a new contract.  Check out Marc Stein’s story for more and tune in to “The Game Plan” with Jack Armstrong and me for more info on chatter on this subject (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4422452)

(3) Michael Beasley in rehab.  Some reports have stated it could be for substance abuse … others are saying it’s stress-related.  I’m saying:  it’s none of our business right now.  Let the man deal with whatever is bothering him and talk about it when he’s ready to talk about it.  I give him – or his friends/family/advisers – credit for having the strength to recognize that help may have been needed … and he went and go it.  It takes a strong man (strong person) to do that.

MORE BRAWLIN’

Remember last month when Canada and Italy got into some fisticuffs during a friendly overseas?  Well, the brawlin’ continues on the hardwood – and this time the scuffle got MUCH worse – as Mexico and Uruguay squared off during a tune-up for the FIBA Americas.

SHOUT-OUT TO FAN 590 STAFFER

If you’re a regular listener to the Fan 590, you probably know the name – or at least the voice of – Andrew Nie.  Andrew is normally on the air Monday-Friday from 8pm-1am.  He’s the FAN’s evening sportscaster and all-round nice guy!

Well, my best wishes go out to Andrew right now … following MAJOR surgery a couple of weeks ago.

Nie had open-heart surgery to replace his aortic root, ascending thoracic aorta, and his aortic valve.  Wow!

All the best Andrew.  Look forward to hearing you back on the airwaves some time in October or November – once your recovery is over!

That is an incredible video. What was with the chairs? People can be so stupid. The guys who picked up the charis should all be charged and banned for life, as well as the Uruguan player who threw the first punch.

As far as the referees are concerned, get a deal done please. The NBA refs are some of the most abused and underappreciated on the biz. I used to ref kids games, and it’s not easy doing that. I can’t imagine what these guys go through with 7 foot man children.

One final point, who cares about A.I. and his antics. We talking about practise man, not a game, practise.

Because it is somehow less improtant.

    Hope Andrew is doing well!

Having a MAJOR heart surgery on his aortic root, ascending thoracic aorta, and his aortic valve is very scary and can’t wait from hearing from him in October or November.

    WOW!

What’s with this video! WHY ARE THEY FIGHTING!!! this scuffle indeed MUCH worser than Canada verus Italy!
    Isn’t this a freindly game?

So, why are they fighting? This is NOT a gold medal game!

I hate seeing these kind of videos because it kills the game of basketball!

Don`t see how Allen Iverson would help the Grizzlies. He would just be taking shots away from Mayo and Gay.

Even in a “potpourri” of news items, not even a sniff to comment on the “Shaq vs” phenom.

In case you missed it (and I assume most of you had better things to do) Shaq, after getting totally winded running about 60 yards, was beaten by some no-name Steelers quarterback in a game of touch football even with a 40/20 yard handicap 3x and and then proceeded with a tournament winning male partner to get absolutley whipped by an admittedly very good girls volleyball duo.

Did anyone else notice that Shaq was the ONLY one sweating (profusely) out there?

Maybe the whole thing is SUPPOSED to be a joke with everyone knowing he doesn’t have a chance to even compete on this show but that’s not the way he’s presenting it.

I have to admit it’s pretty amusing but only becuase he’s just not that good an ATHLETE. Ben Roethlisberger imitating Shaq running was classic.

I know I might take a few shots for that, but he’s not even the best BASKETBALL player at any other position, never mind challenging the best of the world at other sports (even with a sizeable handicap).

He’s just not witty enough to carry the show either although I applaud the charity angle they use. Believing he’s not taking this seriously either, helps to make the show palatable, but is he???

-still believe that both he and Vince Carter blow body parts out this year and the Raps move up the ladder.

A.I. should sign with the Knicks (one year contract, as D.W. wants to have cap space for 2010), as he would fit that offence perfectly with Mike D’s 7 seconds or less offence…Iverson still has the wheels and will def. get his shots up without really taking away from his teammates…I think it would be the best fit for Iverson.

Iverson to New York? I don’t think that would happen in my opinion. But, I hope it does because it would be a perfect fit for A.I.

    What about Denver? LOL!
