Monday July 20 2009 – 4:01am Eastern (Toronto, ON)
The Indianapolis Star is reporting that Jarrett Jack is coming to Toronto.
Mike Wells of the Star tracked down Jack and Sunday evening and the restricted free agent said the Indiana Pacers are NOT going to match the contract offer that is currently on the table from the Raptors (a reported 4 year / $20 million deal).
The Indy Star is also reporting that the Raps will hold a press conference on Tuesday to unveil their latest signing.
“It took a minute, but I was able to secure a contract for four years,” Jack said to the Star. “I’m looking forward to playing with Chris (Bosh) again. It will be like our freshman year (at Georgia Tech) all over again.”
Jack and Bosh were actually roommates in college and have remained as close friends since then.
The 6’3″ guard is coming off a carry year with the Pacers … where he averaged 13.1 PPG, 4.1 ASST, and 3.4 REB. And he says he’s leaving the Hoosier state with a heavy heart.
“I wanted to be a Pacer come next season,” Jack told the Star. “I’m indebted to coach (Jim) O’Brien for what he did for me last season. Not only him, but also (team president) Larry Bird and (general manager) David Morway. They put me in the position to play well and get a long-term contract. I’ll always be indebted to them.”
NOW WHAT?
Toronto is still hoping to lure Carlos Delfino back to Toronto but there is some work to be done on that potential deal. There are rumblings that another team (in the NBA) could be in the mix for Delfino’s services as well, and the Raptors will obviously want to get a clean bill of health on the Argentinian’s sore shoulder as well. Apparently Deflino has actually been proactive with the shoulder on his own … seeking medical attention/advice that he can pass on (i.e. – a “thumbs up”) to his future employer.
And the Raps remain interested in former Raptor Rasho Nesterovic as well.
There is no real timeline on these negotiations or possible signings. Time will tell (remember it’s only July 20).
MORE JACK
Cheap plug …
I will be co-hosting “The Game Plan” this week with Jack Armstrong. We’ll be on the air from 2:00-4:00pm … Monday-Friday on the FAN 590.

Hey Eric,
I was under the assumption that only the Raps can offer him a contract since he was our asset before he went to Russia. Are you saying that any team in the NBA can make an offer for him? Do we get the right to match? Just curious. Thanks man.
- Sean HLots of time to go before tipoff ’09 and BC has succeeded in making next season highly anticipated for Raptor fans.
Notice how the ever-present “Chris Bosh is leaving” laments have disappeared???
Jarrett jack is a solid player and being a buddy of CB won’t hurt at all; they just need to have a solid winning season here. Almost all of the east has strengthened though.
If BC is actually able to land Delfino (not crucial in my eyes) or Rasho, we have a much deeper bench than last year.Rasho effectively takes Hump’s minutes (perhaps more workmanlike with less energy!) and you still have O’Bryant’s 7 feet to eat up some minutes.
I also think you have more real competition for playing time and safety from the injury bug in the “lesser” positions.
-can’t wait for the final pieces of the puzzle to come together and training camp to start.
- Gary1/3 players we got know we need Delfino and Rahso!!
- Raps Fan*now
- Raps FanI’d love to see Rasho back before Delfino. At least Rasho is consistent night in and night out.
However…Delfino rules at home, and Turkoglu rules on the road…..
- T.J.Eric,
do you think Rasho was frustrated with his minutes in Indiana and got benched because of his attitude/behaviour?
I didn’t watch many of the games, but I would see Rasho put up some great numbers, yet Roy Hibbert wound up getting starts (despite Rasho’s solid play). Eventually, Rasho lost his minutes and barely played the rest of the season.
- James from MississaugaIndiana, obviously in a rebuilding mode, is much more interested in Hibbert’s playing time than Rasho, who was a fill in for 1 year only in the TJ/O’Neil trade.
- Johnn19People stopped talking about Lelis Keliza? Why? He can shoot open jump shots and another match-up problem? An rumors are that he wants a 1 year deal with the most money for 2010? And he is an international player?
- Raps FanThe Raps hold his Bird Rights Sean, so they can – theoretically – bring him back at the best price of any team
- E. SmithKleiza isn’t being talked about in T.O. cause the Raps simply dont’ have the money for him now
- E. SmithJames
Don’t read into Rasho’s minutes last year. He was a vet on a young’ish team (especially late in the season). Hibbert’s growth was more important.
I’m sure Rasho would welcome a chance to be back in T.O. (assuming the money/contract is right) and help this team again in a more useful veteran role
