Thursday July 9 2009 – 6:40pm Eastern (Toronto, ON)

The following comments were made around 5:00pm Eastern.

Since then, maybe something has changed.

But at the time Bryan Colangelo answered this question, he was under the impression that Anthony Parker had NOT “officially” signed on the dotted line with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Thus, Toronto still remains interested in retaining AP’s services for next season.

Colangelo said “timing is everything” when discussing the Parker situation.  Basically, when it looked like the Raps were going to simply sign Turkoglu, it was going to be very difficult to bring back AP given the financial restrictions the team would have been operating under.  But after Colangelo was able to pull off the 4-team deal / sign-and-trade, suddenly more money was freed-up and the opportunity to offer Parker a more substantial offer arose.

But is it too late?  Has AP truly committed to the Cavs?  Can he back out?  Will he be brought back to Toronto?

Have a listen to how Colangelo explained the whole scenario:

Parker has been a solid player for the Raps who alaways gave 100%.
However I think now with the cap situation for the next couple of seasons there will be better swing players avaialble. So if AP goes to Cavs it is no great loss.

I’d rather have Delfino over Parker. The better, younger player.

We need to separate great guys like Parker (on and off the court, a class act) from great players we need to win.

Thanks Anthony, you deserve better (it’s not you it’s me…) time to move on an date other people.

Parker and Delfino would be great, but the Raps now have Wright and DeRozan at the 2. I don’t mind that. They do need a back-up 4 or 5 that can play solid minutes. How about an Oakley circa 1999. What are your thoughts E? Who will be a rebounding big for the Raps off the bench? Varejeo would have been nice, but not for the price the Cavs paid for him.

Kevin…just a bit of advice…I wouldn’t want Allen Iverson on my son’s junior high school BB team.

Talk about a guarantee to ruin anything good about an (hopefully) improving franchise.

There is a reason no one wants AI on their team. Perhaps Stephon Marbury and him could organize their own league of loser thugs.

He is the antithesis of what I would want from a player on my team.

If AP Does get Signed with Cavs what are the chances BC can pick up Jarret Jack and Matt Barnes ?

Also what has happened to Chris Wilcox, he was always a good player but i havent seen him do much of late.

jack and barnes/kleiza would be tremendous..hearing rasho’s name is not bad either because we need someone to defend shaq and/or howard in a 7 game series if barney gets in trouble…we still have the biannual too…i really think jack is the answer to some of our problems in the backcourt…and he already has a connection with our best player…

    BC going to pick-up:

    1. Rasho.N

    2. J.Jack

    3. C.Delfino

    4. Pop’s M.B

*These player make a lot of sense because we need a vet big man to help Bargnani, we need a solid back-up point guard J.Jack, we need a sixed man, and WE NEED POP’S!!!!!!!

    Hello Eric!

I just read this afternoon about Parker’s signing with the Cavs. It’s pretty sad though but it’s part of the business. He was a great help for the Raps this season too.

I have no problem with AP leaving. I do understand he was a nice guy and all, but he was a defensive liability on the court. His man always had too many open looks.

I don’t understand what everyone is going crazy about, this team is going to be no different than last years bunch, that like to take jumps shots.

    Bargnani
    Hedo
    Calderone
    Delfino

an all Euro team is an all shooting team with very minimal defense.

Brandon Bass would have been a great pickup, he is a servicable young, strong banger type player in the post that averged 8.5 points and 4.5 rebounds. Orlando signed him away from Dallas for 18 million over 5 years.

Richard Jefferson would have also been a good pickup for possible Shaun Marion. Spurs gave up nothing to get Jefferson.

What about a possible sign and trade Shaun marion for Rashhed Wallase. We can argue about Rasheeds attitude, but there is no arguement about his game and toughness inside.

It’s possible Chris is getting tired of this all Euro situation and tired that Colangelo has done nothing to aquire consistant tougness and rebounding to assist him inside.

Once again Colangelo made moves to internationalize the team, this is purely to help the organizations bottom line, and not neccessarily to help the teams advancement in the standings. Does this not sound like what MLSE did with the leafs. Forget about the standings because the acc’s hocket games will always sell out, worry about the marketing and bottom line.

Eric When you make comments like I told fans that he would fix it.

Please tell me how he fixed the Raptors major concerns?

The raps need to bring back Will Solomon. He is one of the greatest point guards to ever play the game. Tears of joy shed from my eyes whenever I hear his name.

    - Jonathan
  25. 25.

Jonathan Will Soloman can play ball he is a ball hog and turn-over prone!!!!

Thomas all these players you listed can go instead and not settle for the jump-shot and lets make sure Jay.T helps them at that.

Bosh loves the moves Bryan.C if you read his twitter post.

    I change my mind:

    BC going to pick-up:

    1. Rasho.N

    2. J.Jack

    3. C.Delfino

Not Pops’s M.B because if they were interested in him he would have played in the summer league!

    - Raps Fan
  26. 26.

Hey Thomas how hasn’t he fix things? Throwing out random trade scenario’s means nothing . Rasheed was a FA he ultimately was signing where he wanted to be which was in Boston or San An. Same thing with Marion, he was an FA and wanted to go to Dallas. Brian has done a decent job this summer and the there is still more to come. By the way just because a player is from over seas doesn’t mean his defence is weak can we all stop making that stupid generalization. The Raps addressed rebounding and defence with Evans this off season and drafted an athletic swingman.

Very, very observant remarks, Thomas. Enough said.

And Lanny from Whitby — season seat holders had to renew tickets nearly six freakin’ months ago!

Well, not quite but MLSE were vultures yet again — going after our money earlier and earlier every season.

Anyways, I’ve had four for 9 seasons — but, after eating seats for years, I decided to cut back to two seats for this year. And it had nothing at all to do with the economy — it was all about MLSE, and having only one way to show my disdain for the way the company is run. That, coupled with Bryan Colangelo’s arrogant manner of addressing his season seat holders and fans, are driving me away. I am fed up with the constant losing and/or never meeting preseason goals.

I’ll never, ever forget BC, with his wobbly head fastened to his $300 dress shirt, spewing garbage about how last year’s team was the best he had put together in his three years as Raptors GM.

    What a joke.

Colangelo desrves credit for making several nice moves .

.DeRozan is a young player with a lot of potential .

Evans adds a banger with grit .

    Turkoglu is a potential All-Star .

.Antoine Wright has shown flashes in the past .

If Raps get Jack, who has starter’s ability , that is a good improvement to team’s depth .

The jury is still out on Triano and Iavaroni as coaches .

Imo Colangelo messed up badly last season, but he gets a 9/10 for his moves since the season ended.

Hey Eric, is it possiblt to bring in Hall of Famers like a Clyde Drexler to work with DeMar DeRozan? Because there’s a big chance DeRozan could develope into a bust without help and a good teacher.

    - Yao
  31. 31.

I’m totally with you, Chas. Absolutely pleased with every move Colangelo made in the offseason.

But…and it’s a big but…there’s a whole season of ball to play. And we’ve all been down this road before.

I need 40 games before I judge the success of the moves. Maybe a full season, including the playoffs.

BC is in major desperation mode here. He realizes he has only tarnished his reputation as a good GM while in Toronto.

He will not be given another chance to get this team deep into the playoffs. First round losses are no longer acceptable. Either this team goes deep into the playoffs, or he is done. In my mind, at least.

This could be a train wreck waiting to happen. For the sake of “my” team, I hope that’s not the case. But, I am so tired of this team’s lack of success over it’s entire franchise history.
