Friday April 10 2009 – 7:18pm Eastern (Toronto, ON)
As I’m writing this, the Blue Jays are in Cleveland … leading the Indians 4-3 in the top of the 5th.
However, that game is in a rain delay … and that will likely affect tonight’s broadcast of the Raptors and Wizards.
The umpires still haven’t made a decision RE: calling the game in Cleveland … or waiting out Mother Nature and continuing to play the game.
If the Jays and Indians are called-off within the next 30 minutes or so (by 7:30pm – 7:45pm at the latest) we will likely have the Raps and Wiz on the FAN at 8:00pm. We won’t miss the tip-off or anything.
However, if a decision on the baseball game isn’t made shortly, and the folks in Ohio continue to wait-out the rain, there’s a very good chance that Jonesy and I won’t be heard on the FAN ’til well into the 1ST quarter (or later). Our broadcast will be joined in progress in that scenario.
What further complicates matters … is that the Blue Jays are broadcast on more than 10 radio stations across the country. Thus, flicking the switch between the Jays and Raptors is not an easy task … because you’re not just dealing with the folks in Toronto and Southern Ontario that are listening to the FAN 590 … you’re dealing with listeners from across the country.
It’s a programming issue that rarely, rarely happens … but it’s also something that can’t be avoided.
So if you’re a basketball fan and you’re hoping to hear the Raptors and Wizards in its entirety, keep your fingers crossed that (a) the baseball game is called, (b) the baseball game is simply over by 8:00pm.
I will try to keep you updated over the next hour or so. Or, just turn on the FAN 590 and you’ll know what’s happening!
Thanks
E. Smith
* For the hoop freaks that are interested … Andrea Bargnani WILL play (and start) tonight against Washington.
* Also, Gilbert Arenas is in town with the Wizards, but he will NOT play.

UPDATE – We ARE on the air with the game.
- E. SmithThe bosses decided to wait out the baseball on the network, but get to the Raptors (in time for the tip-off) on the FAN 590
- E. SmithJust about to go live as I’m typing this. We’ll be on the air about 2-3 minutes before tip.
Talk to you after the game – on an abbreviated post-game show (’til 11pm)
- E. SmithI can only imagine the nightmare it must be to be forced to watch a game between the Toronto Raptors and Washington Bullets…er, I mean…Wizards.
Eric…you’re certainly earning your pay with this one!
Thankfully, I’ve got some old Three’s Company reruns to watch tonite…I’ll watch anything to avoid these two dregs of the NBA.
- brentoI asked this question several months ago, after the Raps were beaten by the OKC Thunder (I think that’s what they’re called).
Now, I’ll ask it again:
If Team X is beaten by Team Y, and Team Y is the worst team in the league, does that make Team X worse than Team Y?
I am so glad Rogers did not strike a deal with TSN.
Soooooo glad.
