I can’t believe it’s October already.  It seems like only a few months ago I was rining in the new year in New Orleans - after the Raptors knocked off the Hornets.

But I digress.

I’m getting set to head back out to Carleton U for day 2 of Training Camp, but I wanted to check in with a quick blog before I left.

Day 1 was pretty quiet, and if you’re Sam Mitchell and Bryan Colangelo … quiet is a good thing at camp.  No major injuries, no personality conflicts, no whining or complaining … just a two solid workouts.  Period.

Of course there’s still the lingering issue of Nathan Jawai’s cardiac condition - which he’ll get checked out by specialists before the end of the week - and as I reported here last night … Joey Graham did tweak a hammy.  He says he’ll be good to go though.

If there was any “news” to come out of Day 1 … perhaps it was my exclusive 1 on 1 with Jose Calderon.  The point guard finally opened up about the controversial photo he and the Spanish National Team took prior to the Beijing Olympics.  You may have read Calderon’s apology on his website, and seen quotes from him in various newspapers … but … to my knowledge … this is the first time Jose has spoken on-mike (TV or radio) about the incident.  It’s different when you can actually hear a person speak; hear the tone or inflection in their voice; know they mean it when they say “I’m sorry”.

Instead of writing more about it and transcribing Calderon’s quotes, check out the Audio On Demand section of this website.  The interview is only about 4:00 minutes … so I’m sure you can spare the time, and I think you’ll enjoy the listen.

I’ll be back later this afternoon with an update from the morning workout

Good to hear from Jose - sincere as always.

PS - good to see your blog back at the top of the front page list where it belongs!

Thanks Dan. Selfishly, I agree. They shouldn’t have moved it!

And I agree RE: Jose too

Listening to the interview replay on the fan right now. Was this a big story PRIOR to the Olympics or even during? This is the 1st I hear of it. And you’re right, you can hear the sencerity in Jose’s voice. It was the UPS-type company that asked them to pose like that? Are they being attacked publicly too?

On an Eric Smith note, are your filling in for any hosts in the next little while? Always enjoy your show (as for your Raptors games, sorry, I tend to watch the games on TV…).

    Have a good season!

    Eric,

I kinda agree that my numbers for the projected starters(yesterday) were a bit inflated but with O’Neal in the mix, there’s a decent possibility of outrebounding and outblocking the opposition 7 out of 10 times, something Raps have rarely done in the past.

And it’s always good to have one point guard playing major minutes and Calderon is at the peak of his career both experience and age-wise and I am sure he’ll put up some great numbers this year. Law of average says, Andrea will have a better year and this team should atleast win the home court for the first round in playoffs.
