Friday August 29 2008 – 5:00pm Eastern

In case you missed it – and in case you don’t have out-of-town plans for this final long weekend of the Summer – the Canadian Interuniversity Sports (CIS) announced earlier this week that they’ll be hosting a number of NCAA teams in Ontario, BC, Alberta, and Quebec over the next few days.

Here’s the official press release and schedule courtesy of the CIS (http://www.universitysport.ca/):

Reigning CIS men’s champion Brock will host a trio of NCAA opponents at Bob Davis Gymnasium in St. Catharines, Ont., on Labour Day weekend. The Badgers, who captured the second CIS title in school history last march with a 64-61 win over Acadia, will face Buffalo on Friday night (8 p.m.), Mercer on Saturday evening (7:30 p.m.) and Missouri on Sunday afternoon (2 p.m.).

Meanwhile, the McGill Redmen, Carleton Ravens and Ottawa Gee-Gees all get the opportunity to battle 2007-08 NCAA men’s champion Kansas. The Redmen face the Jayhawks at uOttawa’s Montpetit Hall Saturday at 11 a.m., the Ravens and Kansas meet later Saturday (7 p.m.) at Scotiabank Place, and the Gee-Gees host the U.S. champs Sunday at 7 p.m. at Montpetit Hall.

Kansas claimed its first NCAA title since 1988 last April with a 75-68 overtime victory over Memphis.

On the women’s side, the defending CIS champion UBC Thunderbirds host Louisiana State on Saturday (3 p.m.) and Baylor on Sunday (5 p.m.).

This is pretty interesting. Maybe the time has come that we give athletes scholarships and allow kids in Canada the option of staying home and playing ball. I often have said how unfair the NCAA system is unfair based on the amount of revenue they generate. Kids deserve some of that beyond an education. Here they deserve a chance at free education CIS does not bring in the amount of cash NCAA does but they can at least give the athletes a free education. School build their awareness through sports teams it is least they can do. Thanks for making people aware of these games Eric.

I’ve been saying that for years; have even talked about it on Hoops and chatted with CIS and CCAA folks about it.

Schools ARE starting to give partial scholarships for athletics, but it’s nothing compared to the U.S.

Saturday night, the defending NCAA champion Kansas Jayhawks played the Carleton Ravens at The Scotiabank Centre in Ottawa. Final score…
    Kansas 84, Carleton 83
-and the Ravens missed the winning shot at the buzzer!

The Ravens also trampled Northeastern University 77-47 South Alabama 78-59 and U Buffalo 84-74. Maybe it’s time to give coach Dave Smart his due…he’s the best hoops coach in this country (outside of the NBA). By having the Ravens play the Big Guns of the NCAA (they were the first to do it), he’s made them nearly invincible in this country (I said nearly) and THE NUMBER ONE SPORTS TEAM/ORGANIZATION IN THE ENTIRE CIAU! Does anybody care to argue? I didn’t think so.

…and it’s nice to see the rest of the country following the Ravens’ lead. The University of South Alabama Jaguars had their hands full, beating the Ottawa Gee Gees by 2 points and Queens beat South Alabama in triple OT.

Dave Smart has been an assistant to both Jay and Leo on the national team-maybe it’s time to give him a shot-the man knows how to win!

BTW, I know that David Grossman has a weekly show about our local university and high school sports teams-I think that it might be time for the FAN to think a little more “outside the box”…or should I say “outside the station signal range” There’s a real need for a national university sports report-and I think that the FAN is just the station to provide it.
