Friday July 4 2008 – 1:25pm Eastern

Alright, admittedly, this has little to do with the Raptors or basketball in general … But I was looking for an idea for the blog today … and I thought … why not blog – LIVE – while hosting a radio show.  I’m not sure it’s ever been done before!

I’m filling in for Chuck Swirsky today on “The Chuck Swirsky Show” … on the air from 1:00-4:00pm.  And I will blog throughout the show – probably mostly in the commercial breaks.

Any questions or comments, feel free to leave them below.

And if you came here looking to get your basketball fix – there will be a few hoops-related segments during the show with Doug Smith (Toronto Star) joining me to talk about the Raptors and the NBA … as well as Mike Malone (assistant coach of the Canadian Men’s Basketball Team).

Let’s see how this goes …

We’ve had some pretty fired-up callers on the show so far.

    Talking about “patriotism”.

    My stance is … I think many people aren’t “patriotic” … they’re just front-runners.

i.e. – Canada plays Italy in Hockey … folks with Italian roots will cheer for Canada. But if Canada was playing Italy in SOCCER, most (all?) of those same fans would suddenly be cheering for Italy.

Hey Eric I was at the Canada game in Hamilton … Yes I am a Canadian basketball junkie and had my flag … I didn’t mind the other countries fans but when they started cheer against Canada ie making noise at the free Throw line while Canada guy shooting thats what I didn’t like .. Cheer for your country but don’t cheer against Canada..

Just a comment on your last 2 callers

I am a Canadian born and raised but currently working and living in Little Rock AR.
Regarding the first caller, I can tell you first hand that he’s was right. If Canada was playing the States in any sporting event or anything else for that matter and I wore my country colors, I’d probably get shot. Well actually I’d get asked, what State is Canada but that’s another story. I can’t imagine what would happen if I wore a complete foreign countries colors.

Regarding the last caller, what an idiot. Health Care is not free. I pay tax dollars and I’m entitled to all the countries benefits. I am born and raised Canadian but I despise Team Canada (hockey). I think that’s what make our country so great, I have the right to cheer for things that aren’t Canadian. I can question my government for their actions. If that guy thinks otherwise the please tell him to come down south, he’ll fit right in.

GAETANO that is stupid, how can you say that? E. Smith Great show. I too was at the game in Hamilton and I am a HUGE Basketball fan, from the nba to my high school basketball team The North Peel Hornets. I just wanted to say, We cheer for what we know, whether its the sport, country, team or player.

Thanks to Jamal Mayers for joining me on the show.

Tough road ahead for Mayers though … coming to a team that is clearly in rebuilding mode .. big time.

At least he’s “home” in T.O.

Jimmy – listening online in the U.S? Shouldn’t you be out BBQ’ing on the 4th of July?

Thanks for listening and being a FAN of the FAN (cheese-ball line, I know).

Doug Smith was just saying that guys like Tony Allen or Eddie House could be cheap options for the Raptors (who are likely looking to sign at least one more player to their roster).

Both would be good options. Just don’t bring Ty Lue here.

Eric can I ask you a basketball related question? What do you think of Canada’s chances of qualifying for the 2008 olympics? And how does Corey Magette only get the mid level expection when he average 22.1 points last year and 16.1 points for his career? I thought a guy like that would get a max contract.

Chowing down on some Subway during my commercials breaks. 6″ Turkey combo … gotta love it.

I don’t know how those hot dog dudes do it though … Joey Chestnut just won the Coney Island eat-off … downing 64 hot dogs in 11 minutes. Nasty!

Andrew – I think Canada has a good shot. I believe they’re the best team in their pool/division. But being 1 of 3 teams in a 12-team tournament is not going to be an easy task at all! And Canada is very inexperienced.

As for Maggette … he may get more than the mid-level. Teams (like Boston) are probably just trying to sell him on “winning” versus “money”

    Hey Eric,

What do make of this guy’s comments regarding the Raps and the acquisition of Jermaine?

“Toronto: The addition of Pacers power forward Jermaine O’Neal makes the Raptors downright scary on the blocks with All-Star Chris Bosh. Yet, Toronto remains a perimeter-oriented team playing a purely international style. That’s a fatal combination that has never worked in the NBA. If general manager Bryan Colangelo can add a big, physical guard, things may take a turn for the better.”

Outside of his weak international style reference, do you think we’ll see a different approach with our offense next season and not settle as much as just a perimeter oriented team? (which I will agree with him on that one)

    - Doc
  14. 14.

I think he’s off, Doc. The Raptors weren’t that kind of team towards the end of the year. They’re not “Phoenix East” like so many people think they are or thought they’d bed.

I think O’Neal’s presence could open up the perimeter. You can’t double Bosh or O’Neal … because one or the other will then be open … as will the perimeter … with guys like Kapono, Parker, and Calderon ready to fire.

I don’t agree with his assessment.

  15. 15.

Then who would you call locks in the qualifying tournment or at least have a very good chance at making the tournment?

    - andrew
  16. 16.

I don’t know that there are any “locks” Andrew … and I’m not saying that Canada won’t be there … but … I’d expect big things from Germany … and solid showings from the likes of Puerto Rico, Croatia, Greece, etc.

If you had to rate the teams in the qualifying tournment, where would Canada probably rank?

  20. 20.

Jesse Lumsden … good dude. And you could tell how excited he was talking about his 189 yards and 2 TD’s against the Argos – his FIRST EVER win against T.O.

  21. 21.

I’d be lying / speculating if I had to guess Andrew. I don’t want to mislead ya, so I’ll simply say, I don’t know.

I think I’d put them in the top 6 of the 12 … not the bottom 6. But it’ll be a challenge to get one of those top 3 spots

Good talking to Mike Malone (assistant coach of the Canadian men’s basketball team)

If you want to check out Team Canada … they play at Ricoh Coliseum tonight. $15

$25 gets you tickets to both games – tonight against New Zealand (7pm) and tomorrow against Lebanon (7pm as well)

Good Show E, Any idea if you’d take over “The Show” for good after the summer? That’d be great. The last thing we need is another totally Hockey oriented show lol.
