Thank you from Brian Williams

March 2nd, 2010 by Nan

If you watched the Olympics, you probably saw a lot of broadcaster Brian Williams.   Here’s a thank you note he posted on his blog when the Olympics were over.  Another reason to be a proud Canadian:

After tonight’s broadcast and after looting our hotel mini-bars, we’re going to try to brave the blizzard and fly east to home and hearth, and to do laundry well into next week. Before we leave this thoroughly polite country, the polite thing to do is leave behind a thank-you note.
Thank you, Canada:
For being such good hosts.
For your unfailing courtesy.
For your (mostly) beautiful weather.
For scheduling no more than 60 percent of your float plane departures at the exact moment when I was trying to say something on television.
For not seeming to mind the occasional (or constant) good-natured mimicry of your accents.
For your unique TV commercials — for companies like Tim Hortons — which made us laugh and cry.
For securing this massive event without choking security, and without publicly displaying a single automatic weapon.
For having the best garment design and logo-wear of the games — you’ve made wearing your name a cool thing to do.
For the sportsmanship we saw most of your athletes display.
For not honking your horns. I didn’t hear one car horn in 15 days — which also means none of my fellow New Yorkers rented cars while visiting.
For making us aware of how many of you have been watching NBC all these years.
For having the good taste to have an anchorman named Brian Williams on your CTV network, who turns out to be such a nice guy.
For the body scans at the airport which make pat-downs and cavity searches unnecessary.
For designing those really cool LED Olympic rings in the harbor, which turned to gold when your athletes won one.
For always saying nice things about the United States…when you know we’re listening.
For sharing Joannie Rochette with us.
For reminding some of us we used to be a more civil society.
Mostly, for welcoming the world with such ease and making lasting friends with all of us.

Hurry hard!

February 26th, 2010 by Nan

A lot of fun was had this past weekend at the Annual “Swan on the Rideau/Riverside Pub” curling bonspiel at the Ottawa Curling Club.  I curl on the Swan’s team & after 2 years without the trophy, we managed to win it back this year!  (It was a close one though.)  A big thank you to everyone who took part!  We raised over $1,100 for the Y101 Country Cares Radiothon for CHEO!

Here’s a very happy “Swan” team:

Keith Urban and his wife Nicole Kidman were in Vancouver on Monday (February 22nd) to watch the ice dancing competition at the Olympics. Keith was spotted trying to get a close up view of the action on the ice by using some “wild” binoculars.  Check out the picture:

Guess what Nan’s having for dinner?

February 5th, 2010 by Nan

My “Guess What Nan’s Having for Dinner”Nansense on Wednesday ended up being Garlic Spaghetti & quite a few people have been asking for the recipe so here goes.  It’s really easy & very tasty & goes great with a Caesar salad & bruschetta!

Nan’s Garlic Spaghetti

1/2 cup olive oil

4 cloves of garlic, chopped

1/2 - 1 tsp hot chili flakes (depending on how hot you like it!)

parsley

salt & pepper

1/4 cup bread crumbs

spring of fresh basil if you have it.

-Get your spaghetti pasta cooking while you’re making this as it doesn’t take long.  Should make 3 or 4 servings.  Heat oil in skillet, not terribly hot.  Add garlic & chili flakes.  Cook on medium low a couple of minutes stirring occasionally making sure your garlic doesn’t burn.  Add bread crumbs, parsley, basil & salt & pepper to taste & cook another 5 minutes or so.  Drain spaghetti & add to skillet, remove from heat & toss.  Serve with a salad or side of veggies.   Sometimes I’ll throw shrimp & sliced peppers in with the garlic at the beginning…it’s really flexible!  Enjoy!

Deric Ruttan!

February 3rd, 2010 by Nan

A huge thank you to Deric Ruttan for dropping by the studio today!  We had a blast!  Deric is playing the Shenkman Arts Centre tonight.  If you haven’t had the chance to see him live, you don’t know what you’re missing.  He & his band put on an awesome show!

Deric is so down to earth, it’s like sitting down with a friend & catching up when you interview him.  He’s such a pleasure to chat with!  If you’re on facebook, look him up!  He might have pictures of his visit here to Y101 posted.

Here’s a quick snap from this afternoon:
