Davy Jones Was A Big Part of My First Time

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

It was 1967.  The Summer of Love.   I lived on a small island off of Vancouver Island.    I was 10 and  was thirsting for rock and roll.  We were not well off ,so to pad  my allowance of a quarter a week  I would  ride my bike 5 miles over to old Mrs. Bloomfields house and do some chores like stack cords of wood, chop kindling, clean brush etc.  She would usually reward me with 50 cents and a glass of strawberry juice.

When I had a bit of money saved I would take the ferry over to Nanaimo and look at all of the albums in the record store. I really wanted to buy Sgt. Peppers or The Doors or Creams Disraeli Gears. But they cost 4 bucks and I usually only had a couple of dollars.  I had to shuffle through the bargain bin.  I would pick up the odd 45RPM  for 5 or 10 or 25cents.  Which was pretty cool because that’s how I discovered The Guess Who, Blood Sweat and Tears and many others.   I will never forget my first album purchase , though.  It was MORE OF THE MONKEES. I think it was 89 cents.   I bought it because I did watch the show on Sunday nights and I thought they were pretty cool.  After all back then pop music was hard to come by on t.v. so, if Tommy Hunter or Ed Sullivan or anyone was having a pop or rock group on we watched. Hell I would sit through 20 lame plate spinners if it meant I could see the Dave Clark 5.  So, the Monkees were great because the whole show was about a rock band.  Anyway, with the passing of Davy Jones  the memory and my first album purchase came flooding back to me. R.I.P. Davy!  You brought me a lot of joy along with Michael, Peter and Mickey.

Oh and my second album purchase?  Led Zeppelin 2 .  Now that was quite a leap from Daydream Believer.  A pretty awesome leap.

Errant Tee Shot Lands in Sweater

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

At the Northern Trust Open Phil Mickelson laded his tee shot land inside someone’s pants. Lee Westwood tried to outdo the feat during Sunday’s semifinal match at the Accenture Match Play.
After watching his drive leak to the left on the par-5 13th hole, Westwood walked up to find his ball in a seriously unplayable lie, after it ended up bouncing and going down the back of a spectator’s sweater.
That bump  above her backpack is Westwood’s ball!
Fortunately the rule “play it where it lies” has acceptions.

CHEZ NATION is EVERYWHERE

Sunday, February 26th, 2012

My wife and I just got back from a pleasant week of golf and wandering around the Orlando, Florida area.  It was nice to get some sunshine and be able to go outside without a coat and boots.   I must say the CHEZ NATION gets around.  I ran in to a number of you on the flight to and from and in between. Kevin Rooney introduced himself to me while we were waiting for luggage in Orland0.  He was there with 17 others and it looks like they were ready for some fun.  He tells me he tries everyday to get in for the 640 Tough Question but alas has had no luck yet.  Kevin , your day will come.  And I flew back on the same plane as dentist  Dr. Mike Pilon a CHEZ NATION member who has done some good work for our CHEO fund thanks to his teeth whitening treatments over the years.  Great to see you all and look forward to the next few months on the air with our 13th Annual TOYS FOR BOYS contest.

McCartney

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

Paul McCartney put out a new solo album today.  Kisses on the Bottom is Paul’s 15th solo album and it features the music he heard while growing up in a household with a jazz musician father.  Eric Clapton plays some nice acoustic on the original song on the album “My Valentine”.

McCartney has always been my fave.  I could tell you what he and his music mean to me but, then I’d get all embarrassed and you’d wonder what the hell is wrong with me so I’ll keep it to myself. All I’ll say is I’ve met a lot of famous people including rock stars and I’m usually pretty cool about it but if I met Paul I’d likely be a puddle.  Ok …..ahem.

I found myself enjoying some Macca on youtube today.  If you like him too , you might want to click play on a few of these.  Enjoy.

Spring is in the air?

Monday, February 6th, 2012

Is it just me or does it feel like spring is about to pop?   When it’s warm the sun feels like spring is coming.  Perhaps it’s wishful thinking.  If you are a winter enthusiast you will not like my wish but I am hoping for the earliest golf season ever!!!!  It can happen.  A golf course in Alberta opened last week.

O.K.   Now, that I have that off my chest I’m going back outside to finish chipping the ice off my walkway.
