The Last Day of School
May 24th, 2009 by real.life
I remember the last day of School in grade 8. That bell rang, and our class tore out the doors of the school. As soon as we hit the sunlight, we threw our notebooks in the sky as high as we could and just ran (looking back now, probably not the most environmentally friendly thing to do). Our entire class cheered as we headed home, all of us looking forward to a full summer before being the low man on the totem pole (minor niners). That’s when I had a hand jammed in my face with white frothy foam that smelled a little bit like Christmas trees and tasted like soapy whipping cream. I had inadvertently walked into a shaving cream war!
As I wiped cream out of my eyes I was face to face with the girl that I was madly in love with (for about 6 weeks). Let’s change her name, in case she’s a frequent reader of these blogs to…hmmm…Mary. So there I was staring into Mary’s big brown eyes, watching her laugh. She continued to laugh as she ran towards her next victim. Everywhere I could see, the under classmen (grade 7s, soon to be rulers of the school) were getting creamed (by the grade 8s, we were after all the current rulers). Girls were being faced by their crushes, and vice versa. Mary was now creaming the forehead of one of the school’s track stars. I remember this part pretty clear, I ran at her. Hard, and while I ran I grabbed a can out of someone’s hand like it was a paper cup of water that marathon runners grab. I ran towards Mary, my hand cupped receiving more foam than one hand could work with, her face smiled at me…and that’s when I tripped.
The problem with a shaving cream war is that grass and foam are slippery. Really slippery. I fell, but with the momentum I had I kind of flew while I did that and as I grasped at Mary, who was now just inches away…I pantsed her! Trying to stay on my feet I accidentally grabbed her shorts, and as no one wore a belt when we were kids, down they came. With me underneath her.
Needless to say, I got creamed after that. If you pull the pants down, even accidentally, of the prettiest girl in the school, a lot of people are gonna want some payback. As I walked down my street, covered head to toe in foam, my mother sat on the stairs, waiting for me to come home. She’s that kind of mom, kind, thoughtful and really thinks about her kids. But when she saw how much cream was dripping off me she laughed harder than I’ve ever remembered. She rolled her eyes at the sight of me and as she stood up, she said “Have a good Summer.” She walked into the house where I could still hear her laughing through the kitchen window.
Last days of school are definitely something you shouldn’t forget, but if you ever find yourself in a shaving cream war, make sure you have decent traction on your shoes…and never pants the girl you like. You know, I should look her up…
