West Virginia Mine Tragedy

April 6th, 2010 by Dave Lindsay

West Virginia authorities are still searching for four miners who went missing in the aftermath of a deadly mining blast that killed 25 people at a coal mine Monday afternoon. Believed to be the worst U.S. mining disaster in more than 25 years. Here in Sudbury, the largest mining camp in the world, we have had our share of mine tragedies in the past and know how the residents of Montcoal are feeling today. Grieving for the victims and thier families and hoping that the missing will be found. It also reminds us of how dangerous the mining profession can be. Prayers for the families in Coalmont West Virginia today.

Salsa in Sudbury

March 19th, 2010 by Dave Lindsay

Fun night last night at SRO downtown, Latin Dancing! Salsa, bachatta, etc,. You might be wondering how I ended up there. Well, on New Years Eve I was at a dance at the Navy League Hall and it was Ballroom Dancing. Long story made short, met Marvin and Zoi from Dance Evolution who mentioned that new Salsa classes were starting the following week, so, I thought why not, gotta try new things. Fast forward 2 months and what was once a something to do on a Friday evening has become a Salsa addiction of sorts. Marvin and Zoi decded to test the waters to see if a “Salsa Scene” was possible in Sudbury and it seems like a lot of people had a lot of fun last night, perhaps a monthly Salsa night will become a reality!
It is a lot easier than it looks and is a pretty good workout too. Latin Dance is some of the best fun I’ve had in a while, and you get to meet some great people. If you’ve always wanted to try, give it a shot, but don’t give up after the first class, it takes 4 or 5 classes to get the feel for it.

Dave, Jay and Conan all use the same formula, but Jimmy Kimmel has his own style and is always funny. You can find it on Youtube, perfect to watch during your coffee break.

Tiger’s Back

March 17th, 2010 by Dave Lindsay

Tiger Woods announced his return to professional golf yesterday. He will tee it up at the Masters next month and I for one and happy that he is returning to golf. Tiger is an amazing golfer and the sport needs him back. Television viewership is down dramatically and the PGA hasn’t been selling very many tickets with Tiger on tour. Yes, Tiger made a huge mistake and he has dealt with a lot of grief and still has a lot of work to do in his personal life. Hopefully he won’t drive into a drive and find himself in a bad lie again. Welcome back Tiger!

Runaway Toyota

March 11th, 2010 by Dave Lindsay

I had to laugh yesterday when reading about the Prius that had a stuck gas pedal and the “hero” Police Officer that moved his cruiser in front of the Prius to slow it down. The media played it up as if it was a passenger jet flying without a pliot….why didn’t the driver of the PRius just put it in neutral or turn off the ignition? Is it just me or do you find that the Amercian Media seems to be picking on the world’s number one car maker? We all know about the Buy Amercian Policy introduced last year. Seems to me that a few cars out of 10 million sold having a problem would be no big deal if it was an American Automaker. But, if you are a foreign company doing well in the States, eventually, someone will find a way to make you look bad. That’s my take on it. I would buy a Prius, hey, then handle well at 151 kilometers per hour, I didn’t even know a Hybrid could go that fast. Wonder if they come with zero percent financing?

Cuba

March 10th, 2010 by Dave Lindsay

Well, back from a trip to Cuba last week, a well deserved 7 days on the island of Cayo Coco. I’ve travelled to many warm destinations, Jamaica, Florida, Mexico last year, but have always wanted to get to Cuba and was not disappointed. Friendly people, beautiful beaches and incredible scenery. Quite interesting being in a communist country, I was expecting to see machine gun toting soliders, military vechicles and stern faced Cubans weary from years of tyrany. After all, we have been bombarded with anti- communist retoric from American based media since we were old enough to walk, so I was a little interested to find out what going through customs would be like. Big Surprise, very smooth, customs officials actually smiled and wished us a nice vacation, then onto the bus and into the resort. People in Cuba are super friendly with an amazing sense of humour. Health Care, Dental Care and a University education are provided for all citizens, so everyone seems healthy, smart with great smiles. The one thing we noticed after a few days is that the people in Cuba have incredible passion for their culture and music. I also noticed that even though they do not have many of the luxuries that we do, the lack of capitalism has resulted in a society that is not bitter or resentful. Seems that our capitalistic society makes us want everything that everyone else has, and so many people get consumed by the desire to get “material things”, we forget that the simple things….the best things, are free. If you can get to Cuba, go….inexpensive trip and very relaxing, I hope to get back there sooner than later.

Killer Whales at Seaworld

February 26th, 2010 by Dave Lindsay

It has happened before and now it has happened again. In front of horrified families, a Killer Whale at Sea World grapped a trainer and the result was fatal, a real tragedy. I’ve been to Sea World before and after walking around the complex wondered why I bought a ticket. A sad looking Polar Bear in a glass enclosure., huge killer Whales in holding tanks waiting for their next performance. I’ve always thought that if we want to see large animals, pay the money to go on Safari or go whale watching. I’m not a member PETA, but believe that large animals should not be on public display for our amusement. I guess some people haven’t figured out that even animals have a bad day and when an elephant or killer whale gets a little moody, tragic things will happen.
