An Abbotsford beekeeper was stung by a theft recently.
Some time between July 7th and 26th thieves stole a hundred hive frames from the 27 600 block of 0 avenue.
The hives had about half a million bees and eight thousand pounds of honey, valued at about a hundred thousand dollars.
Constable Ian MacDonald says the stolen goods won’t be easily tracked.
“Bees will not have tracking devices and they’re not uniquely identifiable. Our best investigative avenue at this point is either an identifier that would be on some of these hundred frames that have been now acquired by bad guys or by somebody making note of either the theft itself or the fact that now somebody is in possession with a large quantity of bees, honey, and frames.”
MacDonald says it’s likely the thieves have some bee expertise, possibly someone trying to supplement their own bee operation.
Anyone with information is asked to call police.
