Over 1400 hectares in the Sumas Mountain area will be protected under a joint agreement between Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley Regional District.
The Sumas Mountain Interregional Park will be the size of four Stanley Parks and includes land run by the FVRD, and land owned by the City of Abbotsford and Metro Vancouver.
FVRD chair Sharon Gaetz says the park land is breathtaking.
“You can see all of the Fraser Valley, you can see for miles and miles. Its going to be the perfect spot for people to hike into and be able to see the beautiful nature all around them.”
Not only does the land see a lot of use from hikers, cyclists, and horseback riders, but FVRD chair Sharon Gaetz says there are also a lot of at risk species that will now be protected.
“This will be a great opportunity for people who enjoy nature and watching these species being preserved to come in and be part of seeing that happen. It will be a great area for school children to be able to come in and look at some of the flora and fauna in the area.”
The Mountain beaver and Peregrine Falcon are just two of the 40 at risk species living in the area.
