It’s yet another night away from home for about 2300 people forced out by flooding in Manitoba. So far, more than 500 homes have been damaged. Provincial experts say it’ll take weeks for the Red River floodwaters to recede.
The Red River may have crested in much of southern Manitoba, but officials say it’ll be weeks before life returns to normal. Flood forecaster Alf Warkentin says the swollen Red River is now 22 kilometers wide in some places. Normally, the river is about 200 meters wide. Officials say they’ll be watching existing dikes, and the weather forecasts, closely in the coming weeks.
The provincial government has been criticized for not doing enough to keep kids from dropping out of school. Tory Leader, Hugh McFadyen says instead of focusing on the high dropout rate, the government is spending its time micromanaging school boards, and creating convoluted taxes. New numbers released recently show Manitoba has the highest high school drop out rate in the country at 12.6 per cent.
Crewmembers of that CanJet Airlines plane that was hijacked in Jamaica on Sunday night, are now getting some much needed rest before talking to RCMP later today. The 6 crewmembers arrived home in Halifax late last night. CanJet describes the 6 as positive, but understandably very tired and emotional about the whole ordeal.
Prime Minister Harper is heaping praise on the Jamaican government and its security force. He says he’s grateful for the force’s success in storming the plane, freeing the crew and arresting the armed hijacker without injury to anyone. Harper by the way will wrap up his official visit to Jamaica today.
“Grey’s Anatomy” star, Ellen Pompeo is pregnant. The actress who plays Dr. Meredith Grey, the future bride of Dr. McDreamy on the popular t.v. show, is a first time mommy to be in her real life. She is married to record producer Chris Ivery. So far, no due date has been given.
