Ottawa says one Canadian is among the 143 people killed in Mumbai, India, where gunmen raided 10 sites on Wednesday.  Foreign Affairs won’t name the Canadian fatality, even though their next of kin has been notified.  2 other Canadians who injured in the attacks are okay.  One woman was treated and released from hospital.  Another man, remains in stable condition in a Mumbai hospital.
Less than 7 weeks after the last federal election, a showdown is shaping up in the House of Commons.  Monday is when the 3 opposition parties vow to vote against the Harper government’s fiscal update.  The document proposes to drop public funding for political parties, while waiting until next year for a spending package to stimulate the economy.  If by the way, the government falls, the opposition is talking about forming a governing coalition.
Well, better make sure you’ve got yourself a blue-tooth device, if you like to drive and talk.  The province, as promised has introduced a new bill which will ban people talking on hand held cell phones when driving.  It also outlaws smoking in a vehicle when kids are present.  Premier Gary Doer says they decided to go ahead with the ban, after a number of serious incidents on roadways.
There was a big police take-down in the Maples yesterday.  A bungalow was one of several properties raided by cops, as part of a long term investigation.  Now so far, police are keeping very tight lipped about what went down, or what they were looking for.  But sources say drugs and cash were some of the items seized, and several people were taken into custody.

The Mounties say members of the Hells Angels are being seen, flashing their colors all over town in Steinbach.  And one local businessman says he’s seen more vandalism, shoplifting and drugs lately.  Barry Nast says he’s started a petition demanding more police officers and has so far collected hundreds of signatures.  Since April of this year, police have busted 18 people for selling drugs like cocaine and LSD in the town southeast of Winnipeg.
The lawyer for the McLean family says it borders on being “evil.”  Jay Prober is really upset with a YouTube video featuring wisecracks about the beheading of Greyhound bus passenger, Tim McLean, last summer.  Toronto based comedian Darren Frost, jokes about the circumstances of the slaying in his video.  He defended the skit saying he wasn’t making fun of McLean, rather the media coverage surrounding the incident.  Regardless, the video was pulled from the web site yesterday.
The Harper government will unveil their fiscal update today, and guaranteed it’s gonna ruffle the opposition’s feathers.  While it will contain some spending cuts, sources say the Tories will also propose killing the taxpayer subsidy for federal political parties.  The move would save the government about 30 million every year.  But, it would badly hurt the opposition parties, which rely on that subsidy for more than half their funding.
And, no one had the winning ticket for last night’s 16 million dollar jackpot in lotto 6-49.  That means, the jackpot for this weekend’s draw will be around 25 million !

5 people managed to walk away from a medevac flight that crash landed shortly after takeoff in northern Manitoba.  The pilot ditched the plane Saturday night, when fire broke out in the cockpit.  Everyone on board, including a mother and toddler, managed to scramble out as flames engulfed the fuselage and fuel tanks.
It was a supervised leave that went bad.  Kevin Hiebert, a Winnipegger serving a life sentence in Greece for drug trafficking, has gone missing.  Back in 1999, Hiebert was busted with two kilos of cocaine in his luggage at an airport in Athens.  He had tried numerous times to get his sentence transferred, so he could serve his time in this country…but to no avail.  Earlier this month, Hiebert was on supervised leave, and disappeared.
So, you think voter turnout is on the decline !  A new study by Stats-Can says fewer people are filling out census forms too….even though it’s the law.  The agency says more than 4 per cent of the population was missed in the last census in 2006, making for the biggest gap since 1991.  The ranks of the missing are pegged at 1.4 million people…out of the country’s total population of 32.6 million.
And the latest vampire movie certainly drew the hunger of weekend moviegoers.  The film “Twilight” earned more than 70 million U.S. in its opening weekend.  The latest James Bond flick, “Quantum of Solace” dropped to second, but has now crossed the 100 million dollar mark faster than any other Bond film.  Disney’s “Bolt” opened up at number three with a 27 million dollar take.
