In NDA senior boys basketball, the final is all tied up at one. Chippewa defeated Algonquin 60-57 in game two Tuesday night. Kris Faucon led the Raiders scoring with 23 points. The third and deciding game goes Wednesday night at Algonquin at 7pm. Meantime, Widdifield won the senior girls volleyball final sweeping Chippewa in 3 sets.
A home ice victory for the NorthBay Junior A Trappers Tuesday night as they defeated Kirkland Lake 4-1. Brad Gehl scored twice for North Bay. Both teams meet up again Thursday night at Memorial Gardens. The Trappers are now 2 points back of 2nd place Abitibi in the East Division.
There will be five North Bay athletes at this years Special Olympics national winter games which begin later this month in alberta. The five are Adele Paquette, Beverly Phippen, Paul Lamoureux, Robert Preston and Michael Wonnenburg.
Volleyball will be a sport contested at the Ontario Winter games for the first time. Northeastern Ontario will have two teams taking part, boys 16 and under and girls 15 and under. The boys team is coached by Danny Gosselin while the coach of the girls team is John Jeffries. Both teams have players from North Bay and Sudbury. The games are in Collingwood from March 8th to 11th.
Registrations are now being accepted for a ladies volleyball tournament on March 30th and31st at Odyssee. The cost is $160 per team and the registration deadline is March 16th. For more information, contact Coleen at 705-474-8044. Funds from the tourney will help the Wildcat Volleyball club, who are raising money to attend a national event in May.
Five North Bay Y Titans swim team members were at the SpeedoEastern Canadian Championship on the weekend in Gatineau, Quebec. They were competing among elite swimmers including former and future Olympians. Jaydan Jackson and Brittany Pask both made it to the “B” finals while Dylan Jackson, Sierra McCourt and Renee Gagnon achieved personal best times.
The Nipissing Lady Lakersvolleyball team have secured their place in the 2012 OCAA provincial championship. The team defeated the visiting Loyalist Lancers in straight sets Sunday in a sudden death cross-over playoff match. Georgian College hosts the provincials later this week. The Lakers will face the Algonquin Thunder on Thursday.
The NDA boys hockey finals are set. West Ferris and Widdifield will battle for the championship. The Trojans secured their place in the final with a 5-2 win Sunday over Franco Cite in game three of their NDA semi-final series, while Widdifield defeated St. Joseph-Scollard Hall.
The post-season is over for the Nipissing Lakers hockey team, after a disappointing 3-1 loss to the Ottawa Gee Gees Friday night at Memorial Gardens. The Lakers, who had lost to the Gees Gees in Ottawa 5-2 on Wednesday, needed a win to stay alive in the first round OUA playoff series.
The city has reopened several outdoor rinks that were closed earlier because the ice conditions have now improved. That list includes the Bourque Skating Oval, Circle Lake, Graniteville, Greenhill, Kinette, Caldwell-Ellam, Police, Riverbend-Kerr, West Ferrios Lions Park and Veronica.
The West Ferris Ring Jacks U16B Ringette team recently won gold at the 40th Annual Silver Ring tournament in Ajax. The team defeated Walden 7-0 in the championship game. Meantime, the West Ferris U12B ringetteteam won gold at a Richmond Hill tournament, defeating a Newmarket team 8-3 in the final.
The Nipissing Wild are planning for another football season. Coach Matt Gordon says there will be registration sessions this Saturday and next Saturday at Skaters Edge on Fisher from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. on both days. He says anyone interested should register. The cost is $20 and that covers insurance and tryouts. He says training camp is set to start in late April. Gordon is hoping to have a 45 player roster, but also a practice roster for NDA eligible players.
Two Gymtrix athletes hit the podium several times at a provincial qualifier in Woodbridgeover the weekend. Corrine Giorgetti won a gold on balance beam and bronze on uneven bars along withthe all around bronze medal. Meantime, Melina Levasseur won a gold on floor exercise and silver on vault.
The 23rd Annual Trojan Classic Elementary School Basketball Tournament took place over the weekend at West Ferris Secondary School. In the Girls A Championship, St. Thomas D’Aquin faced a team from Orillia. They beat the defending champs 25-24. Meanwhile in the Boys A Championship game, Algonquin won 34-25 over Alliance.
The NDA Nordic Ski Championship was held recently. Madison Fraser won gold in junior girls while Aaron Birosh was first in junior boys. Johanna Shie-Copol was first in senior girls while Liam Patterson won gold in senior Boys.
Several medals were won by CT-33 Thunderbirds at a meet in the Soo recently. Kylie Manning won gold, silver and bronze medals while Travis Allured won a bronze. The 11-12 year old girls free relay team won a silver. Several swimmers finished in the top eight and had personal best times.
A number of skaters from the North Bay Figure Skating Club came out on top at the Northern Ontario Section “Festival of Stars” competition. This includes Ella King, who finished 1st in Junior Bronze Women, Nicholas Hunter placed 1st in Preliminary Men and 4th in Introductory Interpretive and Emma Mondor came in 1st in Bronze Interpretive and 2nd in Senior Bronze Women.
Five local weightlifters were competing at the annual Winterlift event in Scarborough recently. Andrew Uyeda and Glenn Ogletree won gold in their weight classes while Richard Found won silver and Matt Blanchard won bronze. Andrew Holland finished just outside the medals in fourth but broke all his personal records.
A couple of North Bay Nordic ski club members made it to the podium at the Eastern Canadian championship recently. Madison Fraser finished 3rd in the juvenille girls’ skate race. Aaron Birosh won bronze in the juvenille boys’ classic race.
Plenty of hardware for North Bay Y Titans swim team members after a recent event in Sault Ste Marie. Over 40 Titans took part. A total of 19 gold medals were won along with 10 silver and 19 bronze. Several personal best times were recorded, a few swimmers qualified for provincial and national events and the Titans brought home a 3rd place overall team finish.
Several North Bay snowboarders and skiers had great showings in the 18th annual Cheapskates Snow Wars. Josh Witt was 1st in the snowboard 15 and over while Dan Pierce was third. Jacob Swain won the 14 and under division while Owen Lajeunesse was first in the skier division followed by Jacob Udeshini in 2nd.
Nipissing University’s Robert J Surtees Athletic Center will play host to this years OCAA men’s volleyball championship. The event will go from February 23rd-25th and feature eight teams from across the province. Day passes are five dollars for students and ten for adults and tournament passes are 10 dollars for students and 20 for adults. Children under 12 get in free. The Nipissing Lakers are currently 2nd in the west and the top four in each division will qualify. This will be the first major event since the center was expanded that includes seating for 12 hundred and a jumbo tron video board.
