Great results for local teams at the Canada-wide Science Fair in Charlottetown, PEI.  Jamil Merali of West Ferris won gold while St. Hubert’s Michaela Crea and Madeleine Yeomans from Alliance both won bronze medals for their projects.  Widdifield’s Aidan Kehoe and Mackenzie Willis are also a part of Team North Bay.

For a 10th season farmers, producers and crafters are sharing their local offerings with the community.  Starting Saturday, the Downtown Farmer’s Market will be open every Saturday from 830 to 1pm, rain or shine through to Thanksgiving.  It’s once again located at the McIntyre Street parking lot across from City Hall.  Back again this year are the many festival events throughout the summer,  including a pancake festival, strawberry festival and much more.  Over 30 seasonal vendors will be offering locally produced bedding plants, fruits and vegetables, baked and canned goods, unique handmade crafts and more.

Over 600 French speaking youth will be in Sturgeon Falls for the 19th annual Franco-Ontarian Games this weekend, which are being hosted by Franco Cite.  The event includes eight different disciplines, including Circus Arts, Dance, Music, Visual Arts, Sports, Media and more.  Throughout the weekend students will take part in workshops offered by professionals to better develop their talents.  The opening ceremonies go tonight (Fri) at 8pm at the West Nipissing Recreation Centre.  Meantime, an open house is taking place Sunday after at Franco Cite and all events at the complex are free and open to the public.

Concern being raised by an author about the number of people dying in Ontario hospitals because of infections or medical errors. William Chorney has written a book on the issue and says currently 18 per cent of patients who enter a hospital in Ontario have some kind of adverse effect happen to them. He says the government should be addressing issues like patient to staff ratios, shift work hours, employee working conditions and the cleanliness of hospitals. He says the ratio of patients to staff should be 1 to 4 and not higher because that’s when mistakes are made that often result in death. Chorney says more cleaners are needed. He says 19 out of every 100 patients who acquire C Difficile in an Ontario hospital die.

Rep 21, Canadore College’s theatre troupe has announced its lineup for this year. The productions they will perform include Timothy Findley’s Can You See Me Yet, This is Our Youth by Kenneth Lonergan and  Waiting For The Parade by  John Murrell.  The performances will take place from July 10th-21st at Nipissing University and the following week in Toronto. In lieu of admission the public is encouraged to bring items for the Gathering Place and the Canadore student food bank. For details on the shows go to rep21.ca

Another season is starting at the Dionne Quints Museum.  It opens Friday and over the weekend will have 2 for 1 admission.  Museum Administrator Kimberley Lyon says they keep getting new donations, even from people in the U.S.  She says they are trying to add a few more souvenirs and items that promoted local tourism.  They already have a paper that shows the Chief Commanda and the Quints promoting tours.  The museum will be open on weekends from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the week.

A two day inquest into the death of a man at the North Bay District Jail last year will start June 21st.  That announcement today from the Regional Supervising Coroner for the North.  On March 22, 2011, 55 year old Dwayne Turk died while an inmate at the local jail.  An inquest is mandatory under the Coroner’s Act.  The inquest will hear from approximately 7 witnesses and will examine the events surround Turk’s death.  The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.

Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli says the provincial PC’s will be holding consultation sessions involving Ontario Northland. He says there will be sessions in several Northeastern Ontario centres including North Bay, Timmins, Cochrane and Englehart. The sessions will be held the week of June 18th. Meantime, Fedeli says a meeting has been set up with Infrastructure Ontario. He says he wants to find out about what the governments plans are regarding the divestment of the ONTC.

Members of the community will be walking Thursday evening to raise awareness of sexual assault . It is called the “No One Asks for It”  Walk.  Executive Director of Amelia Rising Sexual Assault Centre of Nipissing, Brenda Quenneville, says there are a lot of myths that blame the victim, such as by saying the woman asks for it.  She says they want to get it out there that it is false. Quenneville says it is also a chance to spread their message that healthy relationships are ones that have mutual consent. The walk starts at 6:30 p.m. at Police Headquarters on Princess Street  and then will continue along Ferguson to the Amelia Rising building.

A reminder that open burning bans are in place for North Bay, Powassan, East Ferris, West Nipissing, Chisholm, Callander, Mattawa, Bonfield, South River and Machar, Township of Laurier and Nipissing Township.   North Bay fire chief Grant Love says fire works are considered an open flame and that means fireworks are part of the ban in North Bay.
