Renowned OPP canine to be memorialized
Renowned OPP tracking dog Cloud II and his story are being memorialized at the Ontario Provincial Police Museum in Orillia. In September 1975, he was shot and killed in the line of duty northeast of Sudbury while tracking Donald Kelly, who escaped from the North Bay jail a month earlier. Cloud II’s remains were exhumed from the former district detachment building site on Chippewa Street last week as OPP will be vacating the property next summer. Staff Sergeant Rob McDonald says Cloud II was well-respected and considered a hero. He was the first canine in Ontario to be killed in the line of duty. Several officers, local residents and school children were on hand for his burial back in 1975. McDonald says during a 4-year police career, Cloud II tracked down over 120 fugitives and assisted in many lost person searches.
