JUDAS PRIEST: TIPTON NEXT TO RETIRE?
Tuesday, November 1st, 2011
Judas Priest guitarist Glenn Tipton has entertained the idea of following ex-bandmate KK Downing into retirement.
Fans were shocked when Downing announced he wouldn’t be part of the veteran band’s final world tour earlier this year. And although Priest are working on a new album with latest addition Richie Faulkner, Tipton is aware he can’t go on for ever.
He tells Straight.com: “I’m still going strong. But, you know, I don’t know how much life I’ve got left in me in terms of putting leather and studs on and going out there and thrashing out heavy metal.
“I want to retire before people start saying that I should have retired – I think that’s the best way to put it.”
But the recruitment of Faulkner has given Priest a new lease of life in time for the last large-scale touring schedule. “KK was such a big part of the band that we just thought he wouldn’t be replaceable,” says Tipton. 64. “We were all surprised. We were shocked. We didn’t do anything for three months and it was almost the end of the band.
“But Richie captures the essence of everything that he needs to do. And he puts his own spin on things too – you have to see it to believe it, really.”
Meanwhile, Downing has issued an appeal for metal fans to support the genre with their wallets, in case the next generation of musicians can’t afford to tour or record.
He says on his website: “I must urge everyone to try pay for their music because, without your support, our beloved metal will become an endangered species if it is not that way already.
I have many friends and associates that once had a good career and prospects; these include producers, record engineers, managers and of course many musicians. Now most of them are struggling to make ends meet and stay in the business. Unfortunately it is now virtually impossible for new bands to make any headway at all.
“I know that many bands are making pretty decent records in their bedrooms or garages, but just think what we are missing – even as good as we thought we were back in the day, we would never have made the records we did without the professionals that helped us to achieve our goals.
“If there is one thing that I would like to take with me to my grave, it would be to know that all of the young and new talented players out there would at least have the fair chance to make it in the way that I did.”
TOOL: NEW ALBUM COMING
Tuesday, November 1st, 2011
Maynard James Keenan was hesitant to assign a percentage to the process, but did give some insight on how things are coming together on Tool’s long awaited fifth studio album.
Things have been awfully quiet in Camp Tool the past few years — the first we heard of a new album was months ago when Maynard merely said, “We’re writing.” Maynard expanded on that statement in his latest interview with Loudwire, where the focus was on his new album with Puscifer, but eventually shifted towards the progress of Tool’s new record:
“I’m allowing them [the other members of Tool] their space to do what they do, so we’re still in that mode. Even if they told me how close they are to being done, I couldn’t tell you because if I say 60 percent people will start counting down. When it’s done everyone will know. But I haven’t done anything yet. They write forever and then we go in and knock it all out. We’re writing. We’re writing vocals. But nothing’s solid. With Puscifer, there’s ideas and then we’ll record stuff. Then we’ll go back and change stuff and fix stuff and record new stuff before we finally put it all together. But with Tool, we practice jams, but there’s no actual recording going on until it’s time to record.”
Maynard then explained how his recently diminished appetite for life on the road will apply to Tool when it comes time to support the release:
“We will tour, but it won’t be the old school dog and pony show of eight months of beating yourself to death. If we can make a living going out for a few weeks a year and keep people satisfied by making sure we play the locations we need to hit…I love to go on the road and play music for people and express myself, but for it to be something where I’m out there to make money, that’s depressing to me. You end up beating yourself up. Who gives a s–t how much money you have if your back hurts so much you can’t stand up. Money’s not the goal. Having fun making the art, that’s the goal. Finding a nice, happy medium. Being healthy and still expressing what you need to express in an effective way, that’s the ideal.”
VH1′s “THAT METAL SHOW” TO AIR AXL ROSE INTERVIEW
Tuesday, November 1st, 2011
Axl Rose has taped an hour-long interview with VH1’s That Metal Show following the Guns N’ Roses show in Miami Saturday night.
The session will air on November 11 as part of VH1’s “National Metal Day” (11-11-11).
TMS host Eddie Trunk reports that during the interview, which included guitarist DJ Ashba, he asked Axl about the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame situation (band is eligible and nominated; we’ll know mid-December whether or not they get in); new music, his lateness, this lineup, playing with Duff McKagan (Axl said Loaded will open some shows), and more.
Trunk kept fans posted on Twitter about the unfolding plans to secure the Axl interview after the gig, which he says GNR didn’t start until midnight. At one point, Trunk wrote that the restless crowd were “now booing loud because [of the] late start.” Openers Buckcherry finished their hour-long set at 10pm, and Axl made fans wait two full hours before he felt like getting on stage.
GNR finished their set just after 3:00 am, and it had been a crazy long day for Trunk. “5:30 AM, got to this arena at 3P yesterday. Still here…. If this interview happens I might dose off for the first time ever in an intv.”
Shortly before 7:00 a.m., Trunk tweeted, “Axl Rose has just done an hour interview for TMS [That Metal Show]. History made! Will air 11/11 on VH1 Classic! Get ready!”
METALLICA: FALLOUT CONTINUES AFTER RIOT IN INDIA!
Tuesday, November 1st, 2011
There’s more fallout from the cancellation of the Metallica concert in Gurgaon, India.
NDTV reports concert organizers have been arrested for cheating the public.
The Gurgaon police said the operational head of DNA Entertainment Network for Metallica concerts, Rajesh Chandwani, and his team members – Umesh, Ashok Singh and Savio Faleio – were arrested on charges of cheating people and breach of trust.
The police said they had received several complaints after the show was cancelled; they allege that the organizers sold more tickets than capacity and that they were never informed before the cancellation was announced. The organizers had publicly cited “technical reasons” for scrapping Friday’s gig.
Over 25,000 people had gathered at the Leisure Valley Park in Gurgaon’s Sector 29 to watch the concert. Less than two hours before Metallica was to play, the organizers postponed the concert to 4 pm on Saturday. Then, after some angry fans trashed equipment, came reports that the Delhi gig had been cancelled altogether.
The organizers have said all ticket holders will be refunded. They say full-page advertisements on refunds will be put out in the next 24 hours explaining all the details.
The police chief in Gurgaon said yesterday that the concert had been called off. “The organizers have to say why they cancelled (the show). They have to explain. They have cancelled it without taking the district administration into confidence,” said Police Commissioner S.S. Deshwal. He said that fortunately, the crowd dispersed peacefully.
The concert was organized by DNA Entertainment Network; 25,000 thousand tickets had been sold for prices ranging from Rs. 1650 to Rs. 2750. (between $34 and $57 US.).
Metallica is in the country to perform as a part of F1 Rocks and is scheduled to perform in Bangalore on Sunday.
BONO: (U2) “…MUST MAKE HITS”
Tuesday, November 1st, 2011
Bono has once again expressed concerns about U2’s future, saying the band must “make hits” if they are to survive. Speaking to London’s The Sun, the singer said the group has struggled in recent years to create successful singles. His comments come on the heels of a statement made to Rolling Stone that he “wasn’t sure the future hasn’t dried up” for the band.
“Get on Your Boots,” the highest-charting single from U2’s last album, failed to crack the Top 10, while other singles culled from the album languished outside the Top 20.
“We’ve been on the verge of irrelevance for the last 20 years,” Bono told The Sun. “But this moment, now, for me, feels like really close to the edge of relevance. We can be successful and we can play the big music and the big places.”
What seemed like optimism was quickly tempered by Bono’s acknowledgement that U2’s viability, going forward, was an open question. “Whether we can play music for small speakers of the radio or clubs, or where people are living right now, remains to be seen,” he said. “We have to go to that place again if we are to survive.”
RUSH UPDATE: NEW ALBUM / TOUR IN 2012?
Tuesday, November 1st, 2011
Rush bassist and vocalist Geddy Lee recently sat down with Rolling Stone and discussed the progress of the prog-rock legends’ forthcoming album. Work is ongoing and he said he expects it to be released by early 2012.
“We’re almost finished writing. We wound the machine back up about three weeks ago. After a sluggish start, we’ve had a very fruitful couple of weeks in terms of writing,” he said. “I’m very pleased with the direction that the material has taken. And I think we have one or two more songs that we’d like to write, and then we’ll start recording in earnest.
“Hopefully we’ll have all of the recording done before Christmas. Then we’ll mix it sometime in the next year, and then get it out.”
Lee also talked about the sound of the new record.
“I think it’s a little different than Snakes & Arrows,” he said. “It’s not finished so it’s hard to say exactly what it will sound like in totality, but I think that the direction of ‘Caravan’ and ‘BU2B’ sort of points in the direction that we’re going.”
The bassist confirmed that Rush will tour next year, although it’s too early to say where or when it will begin.

The Kinks have announced the released of the Kinks in Mono box set – a 10-CD collection that compiles the band’s ’60s material, all delivered in its original mono state. The set will be available on November 21 in the U.K., according to Ultimate Classic Rock. No U.S. release has been announced yet.
Included in the set – the legendary band’s first seven albums (from 1964’s Kinks to 1969’s Arthur), plus other material (EPs, rarities) on three more discs. The whole thing comes packaged in a Dansette-style box (a Dansette was a portable record player) with a book featuring liner notes, rare photos and more.
GENESIS: REUNION W/PETER GABRIEL?
Tuesday, November 1st, 2011
Peter Gabriel says he knows exactly what it would take to reunite him with his former Genesis bandmates: “a large brown envelope.”
Gabriel made the admission on New York radio station Q104.3, and confirmed that several “great offers” had been made to get the band back together, but it appears that no envelope to date has quite met his expectations.
Gabriel said he would be open to the idea of playing a reunion show for a good cause, citing the 2007 Led Zeppelin reunion in honor of Ahmet Ertegün as an example of how to do it right.
Gabriel’s latest album is New Blood, which features rearrangements of 14 of his biggest solo hits with a 46-piece orchestra. Tracks include “Digging in the Dirt,” “Don’t Give Up,” “Downside Up,” “Intruder,” “Mercy Street,” “The Rhythm of the Heat” and “San Jacinto.” New Blood is a continuation of his 2010 album Scratch My Back, which featured orchestra-assisted reinterpretations of songs by acts including David Bowie, Elbow, Bon Iver, Arcade Fire, Lou Reed, Radiohead, Paul Simon and Talking Heads.
