Dozens of staff and students at southeast Collegiate high school are being tested for HIV and hepatitis after going through faulty diabetes screening. A University of Manitoba professor talked to students about diabetes and used a glucometer to test blood-sugar levels on about 80 people. While he changed the needle used on each person, he didn’t realize the part that holds the needle is supposed to be changed too. While the chance of infection is less than one in a million, they’ll have to go through a second round of tests again in six months.
Montreal police are working with the Los Angeles Police Department to see if Luka Magnotta could have been involved in the murder of a 66-year-old man in California in January. The head of Hervey Medellin was discovered near the famous Hollywood sign on Jan. 17. A police search turned up Medellin’s hands and feet in the area, but the rest of his body is still missing.
Students on a school field trip are to blame for a devastating forest fire from 2008. A Manitoba Conservation investigation concluded the fire near Grand Rapis that burned 530 square kilometers, destroyed trappers’ cabin and their livelihoods, drove wildlife from their habitat and cost the province 4.5 million dollars to put out, was started by students trying to burn toilet paper in the bush.
Premier Greg Selinger will unveil a billboard today designating a stretch of the Trans-Canada as the Highway of Heroes. It will cover 180 kilometers west of Winnipeg to the CFB Shilo near Brandon.
A former Manitoba soldier who claimed self-defense against sexual assault has been sentence to five years in jail in the death of 21 year old Duane Lacquette. The Crown attorney said Jason John Ouimet could have used his size and fighting skills to subdue Lacquette, but killed him in anger instead.
