Another fire down at the Forks last night that was suspiciously similar to a blaze there last Tuesday. The fire destroyed nine floating docks and damaged five more.
The huge grass fire in Selkirk that needed water bombers to help put out was caused by arson. It started as a grass fire and spread to a metal proce4ssing plant’s scrap yard. According to the province’s website, there were 12 forest or brush fires in Manitoba yesterday, with two considered out of control.

A trial began Monday for former Manitoba police chief, Harry Bakema, accused of obstruction of justice, perjury and breach of trust in a car crash where Derek Harvey-Zenk, an off-duty Winnipeg police officer, ran into and killed Crystal Taman, a mother of two who was driving to work. Bakema has admitted to making mistakes but he insisted they were honest ones and not part of a coverup.
A former Winnipeg police officer has been found not guilty of raping a young model during a photography session. Richard Dow, 57, denied any wrongdoing in the April 2000 incident inside his Southdale home, where he ran his off-duty talent agency business.
Two emerald green tree boa snakes were stolen from a home in the 200 block of Youville Street last Wednesday or Thursday. The male and female are both big – about 1.3 metres long – and bright lime green with big heads. Some other items were stolen too but the snakes are definitely the most noticeable.
Movie Village is not going to be closing! They’re just moving down the street about 100 meters to join Music Trader on Osborne. It does mean a big downsize for Movie Village though – 5000 sq. ft. to sharing 1400 sq. ft. The move will happen in June.
The Merchants Hotel on Selkirk Avenue in the North End is going to be converted into a new retail and housing centre. The North End Community Renewal Corporation will spend six months finalizing its plans for the building, built in 1913 and a hotel since 1933, and it’s surrounding parking lot.
