Canada Post had a $113-million net loss in its fiscal third quarter. The government-owned corporation says its loss included the impact from a pay-equity ruling by the Supreme Court of Canada which was handed down on Nov. 17. The ruling plus higher expenses at the Purolator courier business pushed up Canada Post’s cost of operations by $200 million.
Penn State will hold a town hall forum today where students can ask questions about the child sex scandal that has shaken the campus. Authorities continue to investigate claims against Jerry Sandusky, the former Penn State assistant football coach accused of sexually abusing boys over a 14-year period. Sandusky, is charged with 40 counts related to the alleged sexual abuse of eight young boys.
Toronto police have identified a woman found unconscious with severe injuries early Tuesday morning as Leanne Freeman, 23, of Winnipeg. She later died in hospital of a gunshot wound to the body. Police are treating the incident as the city’s 42nd homicide of the year.
Is it Karma? Farrell Lavallee won 1 million dollars in July on a scratch ticket. Days later, Manitoba Public Insurance filed court papers to garnish his bank account. The agency says it was collecting on 2, nine year old judgments following Lavallee’s conviction for a car theft and his role in a collision that damaged 2 other vehicles.
Investigators are trying to determine what caused a fire at Brandon University just hours after students returned to class after a 6-week strike by professors. Brandon police say they’re treating the fire as suspicious. The fire was in a boardroom on the 2nd floor of the Knowles Douglas building which also houses the students union.
A Manitoba judge says the death of a 15 year old girl after a party is a warning to parents who allow minors to drink. Tamara Aller was found frozen to death in a parking lot in Dauphin in 2009. She had been at a party at the home of Allan and Mary-Anne (Kosh-tur) for their son’s 18th birthday party. The couple were charged in August of 2009, under the Liquor Control Act for permitting drunkenness and yesterday, they were fined 45-hundred dollars.
If you were at the Jets game last night, you may have seen a famous face. Actor Will Arnett was in town to help launch a new Winnipeg United Way initiative. “Dream Seats” will put pro-sports tickets into the hands of kids who might otherwise never have a chance to experience a Jets or Bombers game live. Arnett was born in Toronto, but both his parents were born and raised in the Peg. His grandfather, William Palk, was the United Way of Winnipeg’s first campaign chairman in 1965.
Former Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley has broken his left wrist in a fall at his home on Sunday. He’s called off his British concert dates as a result.
American Airlines, the nation’s third-largest carrier has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Many of American’s rivals, including Delta and US Airways, have already filed for bankruptcy reorganization over the past decade to address issues with debt and costs. American Airlines said despite the filing, it would be operating normal flight schedules and honoring tickets. Its frequent flier program will also not be affected.
The Judge gave Dr. Conrad Murray the maximum sentence for the involuntary manslaughter of Michael Jackson, sentencing him to 4 years in prison. As it is with most cases, Conrad will most likely not serve his full sentence. At present, it is speculated that he will serve about half and he will serve all of his time at the L.A. County Jail, not a maximum security prison. The judge quickly denied Conrad probation, saying that “Michael Jackson died because of the actions of … Dr. Murray,” so he had no right to walk free.
The odds of winning $1 million dollars are pretty slim, but to win twice, well that’s just not fair. But it happened to an Atlanta man. Delma Kinney, recently won a $1 million prize playing the instant game Super Millions, but had scored a million dollars back in 2008.The single father of three set aside a portion of his winnings to save for their college education and with his recent win, Kinney says he plans to donate a portion to charity.
