Well you know times are tough when the people that make money are losing their jobs.  The Royal Canadian Mint here in Winnipeg says contracts to make coins for foreign countries have been slowing down, and as a result they’ve had to lay off 45 workers.  A spokesperson for the Mint blames the global recession for the lack of work.

 

MPI says enough is enough.  The insurer has filed a lawsuit against a couple of chronic car thieves.  A 16 year old girl and her 18 year old boyfriend breached court orders and were taunting police.  MPI says it hopes the court will impose a stiff financial penalty on the pair.  It’s seeking 53 thousand dollars from the teens for damage to 6 different stolen vehicles.

 

Well it’s a long way to Churchill…and it’s gotten even longer for passengers on board a Via Rail train.  The train, which left the city on Sunday, was sitting yesterday in Gillam, about 8 hours from the Churchill area.  A Via spokesperson says the trouble started when 2 of its locomotives derailed on Sunday, and then high water in the area also didn’t help.  By the way, in case you didn’t know….there are no actual roads into Churchill….the only way to get there is by train or plane.

 

A court appearance is set for today in Orangeburg, South Carolina for a woman charged with killing her 2 sons, aged 18 months and 2 years.  29 year old Shaquan Duley apparently suffocated the boys, they tried to cover it up by putting their bodies in a car and rolling it into a river.  Police say Duley is broke, jobless and had been berated by her own mother for her failings.

 

Well if it works….whatta find !  Scientists in Scotland say they’ve developed bio-fuel for vehicles using waste produced in distilling Scotch Whiskey.  Researchers say it can be used in ordinary cars without adapting the engine.  And, they say unlike some bio-fuels, it doesn’t require a crop to be grown.

 

Another food warning to tell ya about this morning.  Loblaws is warning people not to eat in-store baked President’s Choice Decadent Chocolate Chunk Cookies.  It’s because they may contain small pieces of metal about one millimeter in diameter.  The recalled products are sold in packages of 8 cookies…and have been sold coast to coast.

 

Mazda is recalling 90 thousand vehicles in this country and some 200 thousand in the U.S.  It’s to fix the power steering system, a problem Mazda dealt with in Japan almost a year ago.  The recall covers certain Mazda 3’s and 5’s from the 07 to 09 model years.

 

Prosecutors say they’ll move as fast as possible to re-try ex Illinois Governor, and Celebrity Apprentice Star, Rod Blagojevich on 24 corruption charges.  A Chicago jury was unable to reach a verdict on 23 charges, but did find him guilty of lying to FBI agents.  That’s been rejected by Blagojevich, who says he plans on appealing the conviction.

 

Anyone who owns shares in PotashCorp is probably smiling pretty big today.  Shares of the Saskatoon based fertilizer giant, soared 26 per cent yesterday….this after the company rejected a takeover bid from the world’s biggest mining company.  BHP Billiton of Australia had offered almost 39 billion dollars for the company….something PotashCorp’s executives said was grossly inadequate.  By the way, those shares could jump further as another sweeter offer is expected in the next week or so.
