Happy Halloween!

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

Halloween is a GREAT time to be a kid… especially if you’re 3 or 4 years old!!! My son is Buzz Lightyear this year. The only that sucks about his costume is that he wants us to pick him up and make him fly!!! But it’s still fun!!

When it comes to Halloween candy, a U.S. study has found the 5% of all candy consumed for THE YEAR happens on Halloween and the week afterwards! But not by the kids… researchers also found that PARENTS eat one of every two chocolate bars their child brings home from Tick or Treating… ((I think I eat more… ha ha)

So if you’re like me… you may want to be careful with the high calories… Dieticians warn that even the ittty bitty candy bars pack 60 to 80 calories each!!! AND Tootsie Rolls have 140 calories each!

Happy Halloween

Cauliflower

Monday, October 25th, 2010

One of my favorite magazines is Chatelaine. Not only do I get the magazine, but I get great Tid Bit emails from them too… and a tid bit that made me take a second look was the Caption “Cauliflower is great for your health”…

Something we hear a lot of these days is “Don’t eat white foods”, or “Avoid white bread, white pasta, white rice and sugar.” And so, with our new-found focus on eating a rainbow of veggies, it’s easy to lose sight of foods that are naturally white and incredibly good for us.

According to Julie Daniluk – as a nutritionist… Here are five reasons to buy cauliflower on your next shop

1. Cauliflower can prevent ulcers.

2. Cauliflower is great for the prostate.

3. Cauliflower lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease.

4. Cauliflower is an amazing source of vitamin K. Vitamin K is known for its wonderful ability to boost bone strength.

5. Try snacking on raw cauliflower to activate cancer preventing enzymes.

And I’ll add another reason to get cauliflower… it’s easy to hide in your kids food… I puree it and put it in scrambled eggs, cream cheese icing and mashed potatoes… and they don’t even know!!!

There’s and APP for that!

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

It seems as though every year we’re adding new words to our vocabulary. And the latest is the word APP… short for application. But it applies to the term “there’s and APP for that”. It’s in the world of iPhones and iPods.

I recently got an iPhone. First off… the technology is amazing. It’s so much more than a phone. Which is good if you’re into that. Some people just want a phone, and that’s okay. Other’s want their phones to do more stuff. And now that I have the iPhone I don’t know that I could go back to the old boring phone.

There’s a couple of reasons I LOVE my iPhone, and the first is… it helps me entertain my kids while I’m shopping, or just trying to have a conversation with someone. There’s an endless supply of games and fun things for your kids to do. My favorites so far are Preschool MM and Free Flash Cards. My 3 year old loves to play the memory game, while the flash cards are great entertainment for my 1 year old.

But there are also great games for me, for when I’m stuck on hold, or sitting in bed while my husband is watching one of “his” shows. I’m addicted to Sudoku right now. And there are plenty of free ones that you can find.

But other than fun, there are also practical APPS that have helped me. I have a few MUST haves right now. My number one favorite is Bread & Milk. I did pay for this one, but worth the $3. I’m always making grocery lists… but now I have one list and I always know where it is. I can also keep track of what was on sale and what’s not.

Another favorite is Dictation. This is a free APP where you can just talk into your iPhone to compose a text or email. If you are articulate, it’s pretty accurate. It makes life easier to get a quick message out… and you don’t have to worry about spelling or your fingers messing up the QWERTY keyboard.

And my third favorite APP is MulticamCG. I did pay for this, but there are some free ones out there. This gives you The City of Calgary street cameras. I set up my favorite list which consists of traffic on the Deerfoot!

So… if you’ve been wondering if an iPhone is for you… I say get it. It’s practical, helpful and even fun. The downside is… I don’t care for the constant updates of emails coming in. But, I can turn that off.
