Heavy Metal (the 1981 animated classic)

Les Claypool, all-world bass player for Primus, says he knows why Metallica passed on him as their bass player.  A childhood friend of Kirk Hammett, Claypool was invited to audition for the group after the death of original bass player Cliff Burton.  He says, “It was extraordinarily loud – I remember Kirk telling us to turn down. We played Master of Puppets and From Whom the Bell Tolls. I didn’t know the intro of For Whom the Bell Tolls was on the bass – they were waiting for me to start it and I was just looking at them. ..I think that’s when James Hetfield knew. Well, they knew I wasn’t the guy when I walked in the door.”

In other Metallica news, Scott Ian of Anthrax says the “Big 4″ will be closing out their shows in a different manner soon.  Right now, Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer all hit the stage together to jam on “Am I Evil” to close out each show.  Ian says a new plan will see the four of them spend more time on stage together.

Despite rumours to the contrary, Judas Priest are not retiring.  At a press conference in Sweden, Glenn Tipton said “there will be more albums, and who knows? There might be a string of dates that we can manage to do. We’re just not going to do another major world tour. We’ve been doing it for 40 years and it’s time to let the younger bands have the chance.”

Bob Dylan fans are upset after discovering that a famous Dylan-related landmark has been destroyed.  The Fat Black Pussycat was a famed 60s hippie hangout where Dylan wrote “Blowin’ In The Wind”.  Now a restaurant, the new owner has painted over the old sign in red paint.

Jack White has denied a report that quoted Ray Davies of the Kinks as saying White would provide new music for a film based on the Kinks’ concept album Schoolboys In Disgrace.  His people released a statement saying “Jack has great respect for the Kinks and for Bobcat [Goldthwait, the movie's producer], but has no plans to record any music for the film, as erroneously reported.”

In other Kinks news, Ray Davies discussed his preparations for this past weekend’s Meltdown Festival, where he played the classic Kinks album The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society in its entirety for the first time ever.

Van Halen’s new album is now in the mixing stage.  The group have been in the studio with David Lee Roth for some time creating this new record, and the confirmation that it is nearing completion comes thanks to – of all things – an interview with Slash!

Vinnie Vincent once replaced Ace Frehley in KISS.  Then he was fired by the band.  Then he was re-hired, and fired again, and re-hired once more.  He is now known as “ex-KISS guitarist Vinnie Vincent”, and he was arrested over the weekend on assault charges.

Happy 70th birthday Bob Dylan!  The music legend turns 70 years old today, and is still going strong.  In other Dylan news, some interview tapes that were recently unearthed reveal that in the 60s he battled a heroin addiction.

Mick Jagger is apparently stepping out on his own…well, with a little help from a bunch of friends.  Jagger is reported to be working with guitarist Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics, singer Joss Stone, reggae artist Damien Marley, and Oscar-winning producer A.R. Rahman.  We’re not sure if “Mick Jagger’s supergroup” is an appropriate moniker, but it’s pretty cool.
