So, it’s been a while since my last post….my apologies as it was clearly not my intention. On top of the numerous technical issues I’ve been having with the program that we use to blog here at the station, I’ve been slated as the new ‘utility player’ here at THE FAN 590, so I’ve been around the sports world covering every type of event imaginable. From track and field, horse racing, CFL, Charity Golf Tournaments, TFC, to mulitple Blue Jays games – you name it, I’ve covered it in the past few months.
But lucky for me – all of this experience has helped me grow as a reporter, broadcaster and writer for all of you who are checking out the station, the website and of course, this blog.
Other events that I’ve been lucky enough to cover for Ontario MMA Alliance www.mmaalliance.ca , Rogers TV and Cable 14 were The Score Fighting Series, Slammer in the Hammer and United Boxing Promotions. One thing is for certain – regardless of the sport (MMA or boxing), promotion or experience level – good fighters perform – PERIOD.
The great part about this realization is that a lot of these good fighters are in our OWN backyard, it’s just majority of people aren’t familiar with their names yet.
One name that will be getting a lot of repitition in the next few months because he all he does is live up to expectations, is Jordan “Young Guns” Mein. The 21-year-old welterweight from Lethbridge, Alberta got signed to Strikeforce just weeks after beating DREAM champion Marius Zaromskis at The Score Fighting Series event in June. Mein has been a pro since the age of 16 and boasts a 22-7 record. I’ve seen this kid fight live three times already and it was just a matter of time before he got signed to a bigger promotion. He’s a lanky 170lber who is great in every aspect of the game including being fluent at switching stances to confuse his opponents as much as possible. He is the type of fighter and athlete that you know will be successful because MMA is truly his life. His father is his trainer, his gym started out in the family garage and all he ever wants to do is get better. In my post-fight interview with him after he beat Zaromskis in the main event, I asked him what the next step was for him was. And do you know what his answer was? “Go back home and train.” His advancement in the sport was all he could think about even after beating one of the most lethal strikers in the game – all while having to sit on a garbage can because he couldn’t stand on his bruised and battered legs. If you want to check out the full interview with this up and coming star you can check it out here: http://mmaalliance.ca/?news=jordan-mein-post-fight-interview-exclusive-video
Once you’ve seen what Jordan looks like – you know that he won’t apply to this next promotion with the UFC and EDGE shave gel…I’m pretty sure he doesn’t shave!
But speaking of good or great fighters….MMA and especially UFC fans – CHECK THIS CONTEST OUT!!! And I’ll talk to you all in the VERY NEAR FUTURE.
There are a lot of great fighters out there, but which ones are truly on the edge of greatness? The UFC and EDGE want the fans to help identify a fighter on the “Edge of Greatness” and help him become the official spokesman for Edge Shave Gel. Under the leadership of former two-division UFC champion BJ Penn, four rising UFC stars will compete for the public’s endorsement to become the next face of “Team Edge.” The contest gives the public the chance to help one young fighter achieve their dreams – and win great prizes – by voting at www.edgeshave.com/ufc. One lucky fighter will earn a year-long Edge sponsorship and become the next face of “Team Edge.”
The incentives to vote are pretty impressive. Just by submitting a vote before September 30, you are entered to win the grand prize, a trip to Vegas, which includes:
• Round trip airfare
• Chauffeured limo to luxury Vegas hotel
• Luxury hotel accommodations for two
• Daily spending case
• 2 VIP tickets to a UFC fight
Voters are also entered for weekly prize packs (13 total) which include:
• Signed BJ Penn poster
• UFC Fighting gloves
• Team Edge t-shirt
• UFC backpack
The four fighters who are currently in the running in the “Edge of Greatness” contest are:
- Phil “Mr. Wonderful” Davis – a Pennsylvania native and Division I NCAA champion wrestler who is quickly climbing the ranks in the 205-pound division.
- Chad “Money” Mendes – a two-time All-American wrestler, and currently undefeated at 11-0.
- Michael “Mayday” McDonald – currently the youngest UFC fighter who boasts a 13-1 MMA record and 2-0 record within the UFC
- Brian “All American” Stann – a former Marine Corps Captain and Silver Star recipient who has won his last three fights, including Fight of the Night honors at UFC 130
