The Flu

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Had you heard of swine flu before a few days ago? I hadn’t, but apparently someone had. These commercials are circa 1976. They’re a little campy and a little cheesy (it was the 70′s after all) but the message is the same. If you feel ill, stay away from other people.

I can’t believe how many people I know and work with are down with colds and flu’s right now. Wash your hands often, and if you’re coughing, make sure to cough into your elbow not your hand. I know it may look a little silly, but it helps to keep you from infecting others. Stay healthy and enjoy the commercials.

Shelter From The Storm

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

We’re just over a week away from a very important day. The annual Shelter from the Storm radiothon is set for next Thursday, May 7th at HomeSense on Kenaston. We’re asking for your help to put a stop to domestic violence. The Canadian Women’s Foundation helps thousands of women get out of abusive relationships and into safe homes and shelters for themselves and their children each and every DAY. This is a problem in our society that needs to stop. No one should live in fear. No one should be afraid to go home. There is help out there, and with your generosity that help can continue. Please click here to find out more about the radiothon.

Actress Kiera Knightley recently filmed a violence against women commercial in the U.K. The message is clear. Stop the violence. Everyone should watch this and turn it into a teachable moment for ourselves and our children. I’ll warn you that this is very difficult to watch, but the fact remains that it happens. It happens all the time. It’s happening right now to our mothers, our sisters, our friends. And it won’t stop until we make it stop.

Emergency Landing

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Have you seen this on CNN? A homemade airplane in Florida lost it’s engine and the pilot was forced to make an emergency landing on a highway. It’s one thing to hear about something like this – it’s another to actually see it like this!

Is it just me, or does there seem to be way more plane accidents lately?

My late stepfather Ron was a pilot – in fact he had his own plane. I loved to go flying with him, and grabbing the wheel every now and then. When I look back over the years  I always wonder why I never  got my pilot’s license? After all, I wouldn’t have to rent a plane!! Makes me wonder if I’d be cool under pressure like this guy. I know my step dad would have been – nerves of steel on that guy. He was the best.

The Dog Ate Her Homework!

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

I laughed so hard the other night. Billie Jo’s one of the judges of this years Winnipeg’s Most Beautiful Women contest with our friends at Winnipeg Women magazine. Well she brought the entries over to my place because I wanted a peek at them myself (and ALL of the entries are absolutely wonderful – I’m glad I don’t have the pressure of having to choose!!)

Anyway, Beej left the stack of paper on my couch and both of us had left the room. I guess my dog Sasha wanted to have a look too (and a taste by the looks of it) because when we came back to the front room no more than 5 minutes later, there were half chewed pieces of paper all over the place!

Paper is something that Sasha has NEVER been interested in until, apparently, now. I laughed so hard because all those times I wanted to use the “dog ate my homework” excuse, I never could because it never happened. I guess I’ll have to settle for “the dog at HER homework!”

Susan Boyle – WOW!!!!!

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

 susanboyle.jpg

Have you heard of the British show “Britain’s Got Talent?” It’s another Simon Cowell production (He flies back and forth from L.A. to London every week to film both shows.)

No one thinks for a second that this woman’s going to be any good. Watch the giggling in the audience and the patented eye roll from Simon.

Think again. This is awesome. One of the best examples of “never judge a book by it’s cover.”

Now, over 12 million people have watched this on Youtube. Susan’s already been booked on the Early Show on CBS and Oprah! Not bad for a woman who lives alone in a poor neighborhood with her cat!

WOW

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

Thought this was a pretty wild picture thanks to the Free Press. This was taken at the St. Vital bridge – look at all the ice! I thought it was ironic that they couldn’t get the Amphibex machine on the river yesterday because there was too much ice!

By the way, the floodway gates are open, and the government’s got a live came set up there. You can see for yourself by clicking here

Here’s hoping the melt goes according to plan and no one gets flooded. Oh, and hats off to the hundreds of volunteers who’ve been sandbagging and building dikes over the past couple of weeks – you’re all AMAZING!!!
