My Sasha
Friday, February 20th, 2009
I know Valentine’s Day is over, but Sasha got a little “heart bone” last week and I thought these pictures were too cute. Keep in mind, to her it’s all about getting that squeaker out of that toy as fast as she can.
Here she is when she first gets the bone. Click on the pics for larger versions.
And here she is literally 45 seconds later:
I love my dog

The Beast

President Obama makes his way to Canada today. It’s safe to say that Ottawa has never seen this much security. The secret service have been there for the past month making the city safe. All the roads and bridges to and from the airport will be completely shut down. The airport will be backed up, as airspace needs to be clear over the city for 45 minutes both on arrival and departure. Snipers will be positioned on the rooftops. Police and military will be on the streets. Oh, and “The Beast” will be on hand, to make sure Obama has a comfortable and safe ride to Parliament Hill. Check out this video – this car has to be seen to be believed.
If you think that’s cool. Check out the SUV that’s part of Obama’s motorcade!

Oscar Night!

I wouldn’t call myself an awards show “junkie” but I certainly make time for the Oscars. After all, I am a bit of a movie junkie, so I like to see all of the awards handed out to some of the years best movies and performances. I think you know by know if you’ve heard me talk about this on the show that Heath Ledger’s performance in The Dark Knight is one of the most amazing performances by an actor I’ve ever seen. That being said, I’ll be rooting for him to win the award for best supporting actor. The question has been, “so if he wins, where does the oscar go?” I Came across this earlier today and found it interesting:
Academy tradition calls for a posthumous statuette to go to the spouse, or, if there is no living spouse, to the oldest child. Ledger wasn’t married, and Matilda is his only child.
Yet because she is only 3, Matilda is legally unable to sign the winner’s agreement – a contract required of all nominees that says the recipient will not resell his or her Oscar without first offering it back to the academy for $1.
After conversations with Williams and with Ledger’s family in Australia, the academy hit on a solution: “In the event that Heath Ledger should be selected as the supporting actor recipient, the statuette will be held in trust for his daughter by her mother, Michelle Williams, until Matilda reaches the age of 18,” says Bruce Davis, executive director of the academy.
Well, there you have it! Oh, and if you like to follow along at home, check this out – it’s pretty neat interactive way to play along at home. Word of advice? Check off Slumdog Millionaire wherever you can – oddmakers say that’s a good bet

Too Cute
Wednesday, February 11th, 2009
This is the picture that everyone’s talking about. A firefighter stumbled across an adorable Koala bear, nicknamed Sam, as he was battling blazes in Australia and was amazed when the poor thing allowed him to approach and guzzled water from a bottle. You’ll be happy to know that Sam is doing just fine, and already has admirers at the wildlife shelter. A male Koala keeps putting his arms around her! It’s a true bright spot in a tragic story that has seen over 1000 homes destroyed, almost 200 people killed, and perhaps millions of animals losing their lives in the fires. Click here to see the entire video – it’s pretty amazing.

**UPDATE:
Here’s a pic of Sam being treated for singed paws at the wildlife shelter. Oh, and apparently the male bear’s name who’s giving her all the attention is named Bob, and the two have been inseparable. Let’s hope the live happily ever after
**Another Update**
I am aware that Koala’s aren’t actually “bears.” They are marsupials. That being said I still call my Sasha my “puppy dog” even though she’s no longer technically a puppy. I’ve also called Billie Jo a “turkey” from time to time. I’m pretty sure she’s not actually a turkey.
Slip Slidin’ Away

Wow, this is not a good time to have the ABS braking system and Traction Control go wonky on my car! I knew I should have had that fixed last week!! Hope you were one of the lucky ones who DIDN’T run into a snowbank (or something with much less give) today.
Check out this picture! Like they say “when you’re handed lemons……”
**Thanks to the Winnipeg Free Press and the Maicher family. This looks like fun – makes me wish I owned a pair of skates! Check out a video of the adventure by clicking here. Oh, and kids, don’t try this at home. Don’t try this on the highways either.
Flight 1549 Tapes.
Thursday, February 5th, 2009
The audio tape from U.S. Airways Flight 1549 was just released today. You can hear Captain Chesley ”Sully” Sullenberger telling the air traffic controller, “we’re going to be in the Hudson” while they scramble to find him a runway where he can make an emergency langing. It’s pretty incredible stuff! Can you believe how calm everybody appears to be?
By the way, you can see “Sully” and the rest of the flight crew this Sunday night on 60 minutes, and again Monday morning on The Early Show – both on CBS.

1 oz Sauza Açaí
1/2 oz Bols Melon
1 skinned kiwi
Muddle kiwi, add all other ingredients and shake with ice hard, strain over fresh ice in short glass. Enjoy!
