Meat Recall

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Maple Leaf Foods has recalled the following meat products after  Listeria monocytogenes, a relatively common food-borne bacterium that can cause serious illness in pregnant women and the elderly, has been found in three tests of products in the past five days.

Some 23 products, including a variety of turkey, smoked meat and roast beef products, have been recalled.

Brand names for some of the recalled products include Schneiders, Sure Slice, Deli Gourmet and Burns Bites. A complete list of affected products is available on both the Maple Leaf Foods website and that of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

The 23 products involved in the expanded recall carry an establishment number of 97B and have best-before dates ranging from Sept. 30 to Jan. 1, 2009.

It might be a good idea to check the fridge just to be safe. Well do our best to keep this list as up to date as possible.

Canine Idol – Sasha

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

If you listen to the show, then you know how much I absolutely adore my dog Sasha! I adopted her over 6 years ago from the Humane Society in Saskatoon, and she’s been there for me – giving me her unconditional love ever since :)

I came across the Canine Idol comptetition in the Winnipeg Free Press and thought, “what the heck” and entered my pooch. I certainly am not expecting to win, but I wouldn’t mind getting at least a few votes. At the very least, have a look at some of these adorable dogs, and remember that many of them were adopted, and that there are many more animals just waiting for a chance to take care of someone.

You can see more pics of my gorgeous (and yes, I am biased) :) Sasha by clicking here. The voting starts this weekend!

Sasha says “woof” (translation: thank you)

Matilda

Below is a picture of little Matilda (left) and her dad, the late Heath Ledger. Aren’t they 2 of a kind?

Saw the story in the paper today (and Shatilla’s Hollywood told us on the show Monday) that Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell, who agreed to play versions of Heath Ledger’s character Tim in The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus following his death in January, have jointly given Heath’s daughter a gift – their pay! They decided to donate whatever they are paid for the movie to two-year-old Matilda, Heath’s daughter with actress Michelle Williams, because the star left an old will which did not include the little girl.

Pretty amazing stuff, don’t you think?

High’s and Low’s

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

I’m not a big Summer Games watcher – but I have been following 2 big stories this past week.

1. Michael Phelps.

phelps.jpg

This young guy’s amazing! 23 years old, and already has more medals than any other athlete at the games – they call him “the dolphin” and for good reason. Even other athlete’s say this guy’s not from this planet! Michael’s one of the highs of the games -and he could easily win another 3 gold medals before the week is over.

2. Deception.

From the “footprint” fireworks display that actually lit up the night sky  days before we saw the images during the opening ceremonies  (isn’t technology wonderful? I had no idea until I read the story in the paper) to the heartbreaking story of this little girl who didn’t have “the right look” to sing her song during the opening ceremonies.

Here’s the story in case you missed us talking about it on the show this morning.

The little girl on the right sang an amazing song called “Ode to the Motherland.” The only problem? The organizers didn’t think she was attractive enough to perform in front of the world.  Apparently her cheeks are too chubby, and her teeth are too crooked. So, enter the little girl on the left. They thought she had the perfect look for the performance. So this little girl (and she is adorable) came out and lipsynched the song – the song that she never sang in the first place!

To me, this just seems so sad, because we spend so much time trying to tell our kids – especially young girls – that they don’t have to look like the girls do in magazines, and on tv.  The really sad part of this story in my mind? This little girl will likely have a very hard time living down the fact that she’s just “not pretty enough to be on tv.” I think they’re both beautiful, don’t you?

Hannah Montana Wake Up Call

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

How difficult is it trying to get your kids out of bed? Do you ever have to resort to the water pistol? Before you resort to extreme measures, check this out!

You can have Hannah Montana actually call your house with a wake up call! (Well, with a pre recorded message anyway – but still a thrill for any young Hannah fan) :)

It’s easy (I did it this morning) and will take you no time at all. Just visit this website and type in your name, phone number, and the time of day you want to receive the call.

The phone will ring and Hannah will be on the other end to help wake up your little ones! Much easier that the water pistol trick ;)

Have a great “Hannah” day!
